Undisputed Truth Let me preface my review here by cluing you in to how I like to read books. I like to immerse myself in the chosen topic that I'm dedicating time to a book. So, when I read about Bands and Singers, I like to watch music videos and full concerts on
YouTube. If it's a movie star, I like to pull up favorite scenes. If it's a comedian, I will watch their standup rountines and skits. And if it's an athlete, I will watch their biggest moments they are famous for. In the case of
Mike Tyson, I went one better and decided to bust out Fight Night: Champion so that I could play as
'Mike Tyson' and kick ass while reading
Undisputed Truth. Somewhere along the way, I went from fighting as
Tyson, to fighting as everyone else for the sole purpose of kicking his ass. That right there should tell you my feelings on the book itself.
Undisputed Truth is one of the worst books I have ever read. It reads as a diary of a madman with a severe case of Schizophrenia. It's 500 pages (out of 600) of ranting that makes no sense whatsoever. There really was no need for 'Chapter' titles because none of it made sense as it was repetitive. How many times does a person have to beat the reader over the head that he "got high on coke and f*cked more b*tches". That is essentially what we get for the bulk of the book. Very disappointed in what this book turned out to be. All of his biggest (as well as lesser known fights) are pretty much glossed over. Hardly anything is said beyond "I fought such and such and knocked his ass in Round X". You would think that fights like
Buster Douglas or
Evander Holyfield would warrant something more. But it doesn't So, why did I bother reading this from all the way through? My library was slow to get me the books I wanted and I didn't have anything else to read. You are forewarned,
Skip this book at all cost. I give this 1 Star for completing the book and half a star for the stuff detailing the
Cus D'AMato years, which ironically enough feels like it was written by someone other than
Mike because the first 1/4 of the book seemed to have something to say and did it in a clear point of thought. Everything after that was a complete mess.
I do hope that
Mike can get rid of his demons, but that doesn't mean anyone should read this book or feel sorry for the man. He's got a lot of issues and any fight fan (as I am) is going to come away from the book with less of an opinion of the man. I'm done with the book, but I think I will continue to play
Fight Night: Champion long after for obvious reasons just because of the bad taste this book left in my mouth.
1 1/2 Stars out of 5.
