I picked up the JLA line that just came out, issues one and two because they're drawn by Bryan Hitch and I love me some Bryan Hitch.  It's a little less "widescreen cinematic" and a bit more "Comic book" and that's fine by me, even if I love the former.  Decent reads, though I'm amazed that no one in this comic book world apparently ever saw Independence Day or The Day The Earth Stood Still or any episode of The Twilight Zone, cause dang.  SOMEONE should be saying SOMETHING.

Nice little touch: Batman is Ben Affleck.  Straight-up Batfleck in the book.  And Alfred is David Niven.  I can't really place any of the other heroes yet, though.

I also picked up the first issue of All-New Archie, and it's... certainly different.  It's a five minute read, tops, but it's a good five minutes.  The art style is real interesting but the detail in it, well, that's something else.  There's not a LOT of detail thrown in, but what's in there is good, the facial expressions, the body language, the fashion the kids in the background wear, I'm real impressed.  It might be one of those books that works better in bigger chunks like TPBs, but it's definitely worth checking out.

J Scott Campbell Time Capsule: 1994-2004

I could write so many words on this thing.

First, it's books like this which is why I don't really ask for things for Christmas: this is the kind of thing I'm interested but I know that no one I know would know exists or to get.

I think I've spoken about how, despite the fact that I've been drawing for as long as I can remember, I've only started to feel like a real artist in the last couple, and that's really because I dropped it as my primary focus, and started experimenting more.  So it was funny reading this and realizing that I went through a lot of the creative concerns and struggles that he went through developing his style and creating his stories.  In fact, I remember going through the same thing he went though when he talked about wishing he had been more mature writing about some things like Rainmaker's lesbianism or wishing he had plotted stuff out more before starting (the difference being my early stuff thank god wasn't public),  that's one of the big things that made me switch to focusing on writing (plus I could write FAR faster than draw).

I'm a huge fan of J Scott Campbell's caricatures, so I'm glad to see that there's a whole chapter devoted to it as well as lots of talk about Mort Drucker (I wonder if, had I discovered Drucker as a kid, if that would have significantly changed how I learned how to draw).

Oh, and Chip, if you have the book, can you figure out who the women in the top of 258 and the bottom of 259 are?  I recognize everyone else but them.

I also gotta say, I love all the talk about Pixar and animation in the book.  I saw that lousy Gen 13 animated pilot, and it was real disappointing because you're expecting other people to be able to draw just like him 24 times per second.  That's not fair.  But you look at Campbell's art now and you could take any of his drawings and turn them into a 3D model and could probably be dead-on-balls accurate.  One of the things that makes him a master is how well he does the musculature and fat and everything beneath the skin, it feels real and solid and rubbery... they're 3D without being 3D, put the right computer talent and you could get something that really feels like those drawings come to life, even if they don't have the linework in the end product.

This is the first I'm hearing about this book. So, I'm taking this as being a 'Best-Of" type of coffee book covering a majority of his art over his career? The cover alone makes me want this. But curious to know exactly what is on the inside. How many pages? Cover price? Etc.....

It's awesome, it's like a coffee table book (certianly coffee table book priced and sized) and it runs through his career until 2004, the whole thing is a long interview he did with Richard Starkings (who also designed the book and it looks tight).  There's a bunch of drawings Campbell did as a kid as well, for his school paper, yearbooks, etc.  There's lots of drawings and inkings... and a lot of talk about Wildsiderz as well..

Gotta tell you, I've been drawing tonight and I'm seeing a marked improvement in my figures, so I think the book is workin' for me (I'm nto copying the images, no no no, but I've been doing studies and I'm seeing some Campbell-esque exagerations starting to appear.

It's about 310 pages, fifty bucks... only a couple colour pages at the end, but it's PACKED with illustratioms.  And it's 1994-2004, and I'll be honest, I wanna read and see the 2004-2014 as well, they can do a part two about now, right?

Nice. Kind of odd that this wasn't a Comic Con release as more people (myself) would have heard about this before and would have more eyes on it.  Definitely going to look for a copy for myself. Thanks. So, does this come with a Dust Jacket for the book and the Jacket has the BTTF image?

Maybe it just came out, and will be at Comic-Con next year.

Hardcover, but no dust jacket (the Back To The Future art is a limited edition).

Did, like, 3-4 pages of doodles last night and man, I picked up the JSC style FAST.  1998 me would hate me right now.

Haven't scanned them in yet, was working on them until 4am (my usual turn-in time).

Besides, I might do a few more.  But it's interested to see the jump from a few days ago... it's still recognizably me, but looser and a little more extended.  Ironically what I seem to have picked up most is the hands.  I should do a few pages of hands and feet while I've got the buzz on.

Wow, I can't believe I haven't discussed anything since JSC.  Well, I suppose it's winter and I do less reading (or rather, less proper book reading) then.  I mostly stick to trade paperbacks and things I cna get finished in one sitting, since the mood strikes me less often.  You know me, I prefer to read out on my patio in the sun.  I could be out there for hours.

Well, I got a sh1tload of graphic novels last week (enough to keep me from going to the shops anytime soon, b/c D6MN). and really, Miami Vice Remix is the only one I'll wait to read on my iPad because the art is so weirdly small, but it should be awesome, I love Jim Mahfood and the idea of Tubbs and Crockets fighting zombies?  In.

But the one I read today was Starlight.  Dudes, this is why I like Mark Millar.  It's obvious to just label him because of the dark and gritty stuff, but Superior and this proves what he's capable of.  The book is basically like a necrosequel to Flash Gordon and it feels perfect.  The writing is great, the art is... I love the art, doing it like Al Williamson would have been impossible for a number of reasons, but the Moebius-style art they went with is PERFECT.  And the best compliment I can think of is that the whole time reading the book, Queen's anthem was blaring in my head, informing me that he's a miracle.
