Man, I haven't chimed in for a while.

Well, the "big" movie-- or the one that's stuck in my head, was "Dick."  Did I mention Dick before?  I forget how I heard about it, but it was sort of a logical extension of "Clueless," it's a comedy set in the 70s where two airbrain, vapid girls take down the Nixon administration.  It came out in about 1999, but I'm glad I never saw it then because now I have WAY more context for it.

The best thing about the movie: the casting.  The FIRST scene has French Stewart as Larry King interviewing Woodward and Bernstein... played by Will Ferrell and Bruce McCullouch, bickering like children.  Dan Hadeya made a pretty good Nixon and even baby Ryan Reynolds shows up.

But my big issue with the movie was: who was the audience for this movie?  It was PG-13 but the younger kids wouldn't be aware of the details that the flick was parodying... maybe it was a nostalgia thing for the older audiences, I dunno.  I did like the idea of taking a moment in history where people just lost faith in the world and turned it into an almost an innocent romp, that was an interesting direction to go in.

Don't know if I would watch it again, though.  But it made an interesting companion piece to Clueless (though that was the superior flick).

I know the movie you are referring to. It just never appealed to me and I always bypass it on the shelf when browsing for movies to watch. Not sure if I will ever feel compelled to check it out.

It never appealed to me either... I was honestly just curious to see Hadeya as Nixon (I liked him).  I really wish that there weren't names in the opening credits because I was so happy to see people like Dave Foley or Ted MicGinley show up (Saul Rubinek was Henry Kissinger, brilliant casting IMHO).

Been watching a lot of Futurama while storyboarding this indie flick... saw a bunch of episodes I hadn't seen in a LONG time.  Not sure what I'm gonna do when I run out of them, though.

You can watch AMC 'smega marathon of Breaking Bad, which will air every episode starting tomorrow leading right up to the Series Finale on Sunday. Sure, you will have to call in sick, skip bathroom breaks and have your food delivered to you in that time. But it's worth it.  ;D

Iron Man 3

Let me preface with I really, really enjoyed Iron Man. Going in with no expectations, it was a blast to watch in character and story.

Iron Man 2, I've already forgotten so much about it.

Iron Man 3 did absolutely nothing for me. It was so far removed, IMO, but maybe the 3rd story is where they wanted to be in the Iron Man world. To me as a casual viewer, Iron Man 3 had many distractions. First the kid, that came out of nowhere and didn't add much, except said distraction. Then Tony Stark totally losing his **** and getting an anxiety attack, just seemed odd. And then I am STILL having a hard time reconciling his world with Aliens and Gods from a different world. Several times it was dealt with in the movie with him shrugging it off.

The special effects just got into the Super Hero world where the Iron Man suit has a life of it's own.

Ugh.

So disappointed, I know It will be sometime before I want to spend anytime watching it.

The East

I didn't recall why I picked up The East until the very end credits where I saw Tony and Ridley Scott Producing. I must have picked it up for that alone.

The East is about a domestic terrorist group that targets corporations and their CEO's, by providing them with a taste of their own production miscalculations that are hidden from the public. It has a great cast with Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård and Ellen Page. But unfortunately the movie tends to be a bit messy and I didn't quite understand what was happening the first 30 minutes. I also had a hard time believing Marling as undercover FBI. She has a family with Jason Ritter, who is only present about 5 minutes in the movie, because she pretty much ditches her family life for this investigation. Jason Ritter does seem to have only one speed though. He did the same exact character as Parenthood.

I'm glad I stuck with it to kind of get a glimpse inside a group of folks who dedicate themselves to tackle a corporation. But with no leader, justice, direction and goals can get chaotic.

The East is not a great film, but I would recommend for something different.

It mostly likely will fade away very quickly.

Cold Sweat

I am pis sed. I read just a little while ago an article on must see, but probably missed horror films. Cold Sweat got a good review. I'd like to meet the person who wrote this, because there was very little to take away from this film...

Except... if you throw all believability out the window. Even as much as I like odd films, this just didn't make sense. In a nutshell, 2 very old men, one who needs a walker, the other so fat, gets winded walking stairs, is abducting women and torturing them. They also put a Nitroglycerin solution on them, that supposedly is so unstable, anything will set it off.

This is just a silly stupid movie. The effects are horrible and editing worse. This may pass in other countries, but I thought this was well below a B-movie.

Avoid this 'recommended' horror flick.

The Iceman

Another movie I picked up with very little knowledge of what it was about. In essence, based on true events of the infamous hit man Richard Kuklinski, known as The Iceman. The Iceman is play by Michael Shannon, who does nothing for me as an actor. The last movie I saw him in was Premium Rush, and while he demonstrated some acting skills, he still has one style. Pretty much stoned face or grimace. And maybe that’s why he was picked to emulate The Icemman, but to me that makes terrible, uninteresting story telling. Ray Liotta was an upcoming mob boss (surprise, surprise), getting Kuklinski on his way to his hitman career. Gawd, Liotta is one dimensional too. This all seemed so repetitive in every respect.

I turned it off after 45 minutes.

Empire State

And yet another movie I knew zero about, but it had Dwayne Johnson in it. How bad can It be. Well, extremely boring. This was not a weekend for any good movies. Empire State is a brink’s truck company that seems to be the center of corruption. The story dragged about a young man wanting to become a cop, but fails because of past drug bust, so he does the next thing and becomes a security guard.

I think this was going to be heist movie. I dunno. I was so bored and didn’t care about any of the characters by the time The Rock made his way on screen.

I too, turned this off after 30 minutes or so.

Never heard about either one. You'd think that any movie with Dwayne Johnson in it would have gotten plenty of exposure. I can't recall one trailer or print AD for this.

Dont Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvPD20KFagY

Everyman’s Journey is a documentary of the current band members of Journey searching, finding and recruiting Arnel Pineda, a Filipino struggling to survive in his home land, as their singer and front man. The story is quite amazing and the documentary goes through every detail how this was accomplished. It was a slow reveal like layers on an onion, that they told the story. It was quite interesting to see the band meet Arnel the first time, try him out and the evolution that occurred there. Same with the introduction of Arnel to the fans at live shows. It was a mixed bag on reactions, but the bottom line, Journey was struggling to stay relevant and they were able to revitalize themselves with this singer. There’s no denying that trying to fill Steve Perry’s shoes is a massive undertaking. Pineda does have a great voice with exceptional range. To the point, I find it odd to watch because of that expressive voice coming out of such a small man.

The down side of the film is towards the back half of the film, things really slow down and become repetitive. Waiting for shows in the green room. Contemplating next moves, a minor cold, etc.

Most of the documentary is interesting and I highly recommend it, especially if your Journey fan like me.

Didn't know about the doc. Definitely interested in checking this out. Thanks dude. Hey Mac, how many albums have they recorded with Arnel? All I know about the guy is that he is the latest singer and has been fronting the band for a while now, but I haven't (or can't remember) if they have released any new material with the guy.

The band has done 2 studio albums with Pineda. Revelation @ #5 and Eclipse @ #15. I have not heard either one yet. They have also done a live DVD which brought my attention to all of this.
