21 Jump Street

Trailer

Jonah Hill in High School. When it's good, it's Superbad, when it's not, it's 21 Jump Street. My first reaction to hearing that they were going to do a full fledged movie of one of my all time favorite shows, the original 21 Jumpsteet (notice the original spelling of the title?), I was dead set against this. I swore up and down that this would not be a good translation from TV series to Silver Screen. And then I started hearing a lot of rave reviews, touting it as THE funniest movie of the year. Naturally my curiosity was piqued and I would have no choice but to check this out.

So, where the reviewers right? Absolutely not. I was expecting great things based on what other people had said. But in the end, my initial reaction to this even getting made was correct. Don't get me wrong, there are some genuinely funny stuff here and there, but it can't and doesn't carry this movie. It's just totally different from the series and really shouldn't have even been called 21 Jump Street (other than for the cameos to work). For me, the movie was just 'okay'. The best part of the movie is without a doubt, the cameo's of Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) and Doug Penhall (Peter DeLuise). I kept waiting for Depp to pop up and I kinda suspected that he was the 'dude with the long beard'. But I had no idea that DeLuise was even set to appear, even though I spent the entire movie looking to see if he too would show up.

I do think that you have to be a fan of the series for the Cameo's to work on a different level, because the scene that Hanson and Penhall play out is just....awesome. The inside joke is that while Depp was on the series, he always wanted his character killed off so that he could leave the series itself. Well, he finally got his wish. I'm glad that Holly Robinson got a cameo, but it was way to short and I knew that Dustin Nguyen would get his cameo by way of a 'TV turned on in the background' and sure enough, he did. I didn't see Steven Williams or Sal Jenco though. But he was their in spirit with Channing Tatum being named after him. Differently spelling. But still.....

Overall, as a life long fan (seems that way) of the series, it just doesn't compare. Had I stuck with my original prediction of the movie, I would have gone in with very low expectations, which would have possibly made the movie play a bit better. This is just a Rent...for fans of the original series that want to see the cameo's by the original players.

Did not care for it. I am not familiar with the TV show, but apparently I didn't have to be.

Just didn't think it was all that.

Without the cameos, this would have gotten 2 Stars from me and a Skip.
