3 Days to Kill

Trailer

Talk about a movie that doesn't know what it wants to be. But who's the blame for 3 Days to Kill? Is it Luc Besson, one of the screenwriters or is it the "Director" McG? I would say both are to blame, but I think that most of the problems lay with McG as he clearly STILL doesn't know how to put a film together. How is it that someone that has been in the business as long as he's been still doesn't have a clue about pacing, editing or direction? The movie starts off great. Really great in fact. It sets up what is sure to be a kick-ass Thriller. And then.....enter the family comedy/drama. Yes, this is where things go wrong. We now have two films at extreme opposites of each other. But within this extremes, we still have some major direction issues.

There is one scene, out of many, that really drives home the fact that McG just flat out sucks as a Director. For example, Kevin Costner's character just saves his daughter from a potential  r a p e  scenario in a bathroom at a club. Next scene we have him admonishing her when she wakes up and he's finally putting his foot down and ordering her home because they are going to "talk". Cut to where she has changed her clothes (implying they went back home) and now Daddy Costner is teaching her how to ride a bike. WHAT THE F*CK! Seriously, why does anyone continue to employ McG? This is only one scene of many that start out of nowhere and end abruptly. Also problematic and the first red flag was having Costner's character, who works for the US Government as a freelance Assassin returning to his Paris house to find a bunch of squatters living there. So, what does this top secret Assassin do? Why, he just accepts them and ends up living with them from time to time? Um, WHAT THE F*CK! You would think that someone in his field would want to remain off the grid and whatnot. Seriously, what assassin would ever do this?

As for the Thriller Vs. Comedy angle this film is going for, it's dumb. One genre undermines the other. When it's in Thriller mode, it looks pretty solid, but when it goes into the family dynamics, the comedy seems woefully out of place. It's clearly trying to get that 'Family' market they are going after. Also, it's trying to justify why the movie isn't R-Rated. This is a film that wants to be many things to as many people as possible. Only problem it's never going to satisfy anyone for any particular genre. I honestly don't know if I should recommend this or not. It could have been a great Thriller or a good family film, but it can't be both. Definitely a Skip for the average viewer, but I do think for any budding writers or film makers out there, this is definitely a movie you should check out in a "How not to write or film you movie" sort of way.
