47 Ronin

Trailer

I will preface this review by saying that I don't have a problem with Keanu Reeves in most of the flicks he is in. He has his hits and his misses. Usually his misses have a lot to do with him being miscast in whatever role he is in. Well, you can add 47 Ronin to that list as well. It's not that he is bad in this, it's just that he brings way too much baggage into the role of Kai to ever be taken seriously. Plus, add no character development of any kind and he is even further behind the 8 ball. I'm a sucker for Samurai flicks. I love them. Before I fired this DVD up, I thought I was going to get a traditional Samurai film along the lines of The Last Samurai, given that this was based on True Events. Sad to say, that is not the case. Dipping into the Supernatural here basically undermines the entire movie and the contents within the story itself. I don't have problems with Supernatural elements, but in a movie like this, it absolutely does not belong. Visually the film looks great, but that's all it has going for it. Story, characters, writing and pacing were all off. The final showdown was meh. One of the things that really struck me was how bland the fight sequences were. I was expecting over the top choreography given how each new movie tries to outdo the previous one. Can't recommend this at all because it's something I'll never watch again. Not a bad film, but not a memorable one either. I've already forgotten it.

I swear, every time I saw the preview for this movie at the theater I thought it was for Pirates of the Caribbean.  I would forget this movie existed every single time.  That's bad for a movie.

There was actually a scene in the movie where Kai is escaping from his Slave Masters and all I saw was POTC.
