99 Homes

Trailer

I wasn't sure what to expect with 99 Homes other than some great acting within the film, which is what I've heard a lot of people praising and yes, everyone is right about that. The acting is definitely top notch and Andrew Garfield does an amazing job in his role. Also of note is the performance turned in by Michael Shannon who never disappoints, no matter what movie or series he is in. As for the story itself, it's a great concept in really turning the viewer inside out. Well, at least for me it was. It f*cks with your head because you are constantly asking yourself "what would you do"...."how far would you go" to protect and shelter your family. The premise is simple, yet effective. Basically put, Andrew's character is forcibly removed from his childhood home that he shares with his Mother and his Son. It's a traumatic turn of events and heartbreaking when you see it played out. He's at the end of his rope, looking for a lifeline that will give him a way out and buy back his home. So, in order to do that, he becomes the protege of the very man that kicked him out as played by Shannon. The entire movie is basically showing how he is able to steal from the government and getting paid to do it on Uncle Sam's dime. The conundrum is that Andrew ends up having to force other people out of their own homes and with the money rolling in, he has to justify that he's become the very thing he despises.

Now, the reason why I only gave this 3 Stars has to do with the ending. In my head, I figured he was playing a long con to get back at Shannon. Even though this is what I wanted to see, I knew it wouldn't play out this way because if he was THAT smart to do a long con, then he is certainly smart enough not to lose his house in the first place. So, it was going to have to be about a man "doing the right thing and owning up to it" to assuage his guilt. He does end up doing the right thing by the end, but it was somewhat unsatisfying because we never get to see Shannon get his comeuppance for corrupting him and wrecking so many lives. It just....ends. But in spite of this minor hiccup, I can still recommend this for sure. Definitely worth a Rent.
