A Million Ways To Die In The West

Trailer

I don't think A Million Ways to Die in the West is as bad as most have made it out to be. But I do think that Seth MacFarlane was definitely misguided in what he wanted to do with the genre. It's just way to uneven to be taken serious. Either go the route of Deadwood or just do a send up of Westerns and leave it at that. Yes, there were some genuine funny moments that I liked. When the joke comes organically and isn't being shoved down our throats, it works. It's when he uses contemporary slang and jokes in a time period not associated with it does it fall flat and when it falls, it crashes like a lead balloon. These moments always took me out of the movie, which is a big no-no for me. While I was watching this play out, I kept thinking to myself, if only Seth had use Back To The Future Part III as a reference, he could have really created something fun for the whole family. No sooner had I made the connection, we see Doc Brown pop up. Totally caught me by surprised and I absolutely loved it. This was the crown jewel moment for me for sure. Other notable cameos of course was seeing Jamie Foxx as Django and Ryan Reynolds in a a blink and you'll miss moment. I saw a few other cameos, but I don't think they added much to the movie. Worth a Rent at best.

I agree. Not as bad as people seem to be ripping this up. I laughed at quite a few places and amused mostly. I think Seth has been thought of as better product, and it didn't meet those standards. I agree, rent it and just have fun with the absurdities.

I'm so f*cking jealous of you dude, I knew Doc Brown was in the movie the whole time because a picture of them together was circling around the internet before the flick came out.

The thing about the contemporary references though, I think only Seth makes them, and the whole idea is that he's a completely modern person in the old west, the only one who's calling out "this is stupid, this is dangerous."  If you look at the Disney flicks, there's always one character (Genie, what have you) that can get away with it.  It's just the main character this go-round.  I don't remember if any other characters said anything that broke the illusion, though.
