The Quick and the Dead

Trailer

I've always enjoyed watching The Quick and the Dead and tonight is no different. I think the movie is very underrated, but I do get why most people probably don't care for it and it has to do with Sharon Stone. Her performance isn't the issue. She's actually pretty good in it. But for a movie that has her as top billing, she plays more like a 4th wheel behind Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and the awesome Leonardo DiCaprio. Leo is so young in this one and Crowe wasn't even the movie star he would eventually become. These cats aren't the only one that makes this Western fly. There is Lance Henriksen, Tobin Bell, Keith David, Pat Hingle and Gary Sinise to add to the festivities. In my review for Unforgiven, I point out how it's the antithesis of what is expected in a Western. In Quick and the Dead, this is a straight up Gunslinger  o r g y  for the sole purpose of entertaining the masses.

Out of everyone invovled in the production of the film, I would venture a guess and say that it's Sam Raimi who is having the most fun. The real star of the movie is without a doubt his fresh spin on how to film and shoot scenes in the Western Genre. There are two movies that I have always said that EVERY new film maker should watch to learn about camera moves, set ups and shots. One is Three O'Clock High and the other is Quick and the Dead. If you have never seen this movie, definitely run out and rent this. It's fun just to see all the camera tricks that Raimi has up his sleeve. He delights in using as many Western Cliches that he can fit into the run time of the movie and it's still awesome to watch.
