I always forget that Joss Whedon wrote the screenplay for Alien: Resurrection and the reason why I always forget is because he has a pretty solid track record with what he writes. This is the one case where it just didn't work on a lot of levels. Yes, I'm one of the few fans out there that actually thinks this is better than Alien³. That's not saying much. This is still a weak entry into the franchise, but at least it had some likable characters and the story wasn't a complete bust. Just....different.

First off, you have to make peace with the fact that they went with the 'cheap' cloning plot to bring back Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) for what is basically a money grab. She looks like Ripley. She sounds like Ripley. But she is NOT Ripley. Yes, they said that memories from the original Ripley has been handed down to #8 by way of genetics. But it's NOT her, no matter how much they try to spin it. Along with these memories, she has also acquired the super strength of Alien DNA, thus making her a bad ass motherf*cker not to be messed with,

Earlier, I said that there were some likable characters. I did and still do like Call (Winona Ryder), the obligatory Android for this movie. I also liked Gary Dourdan as Christie for the most part. And it's always cool to see Raymond Cruz in anything. As for the rest of the cast....not so much. I'm a fan of Ron Perlman, but in this one he just absolutely sucks as do the rest of the Rag Tag Team of Misfits of a Crew.

One thing that was painfully obvious is where the film maker got some of his ideas. With the Company now keeping Aliens as Pets in Cages, there are a couple of shots that basically scream Jurassic Park. There's a shot that is basically a homage to the T-Rex roaring its angry little head off, not to mention a shot of the Alien walking very much like that of a velociraptor. Half way through the movie Jean-Pierre Jeunet decides it's not enough to swipe from one Steven Spielberg movie, it's better to swipe from two Spielberg movies. Enter....Jaws.

The DVD copy that I watched is from my Quadrilogy Set, but this is nothing more than a cursory Rent.

I detest Resurection in this series. Yes detest. There is so much wrong. Nowhere even close to the original idea.

Winona Ryder, I feel is the colossal mis-cast of all time. When I watched this I almost screamed WHAT!!!. Are you kidding me. This is not going to be good. It feel off the cliff and just got more ridiculous as the movie went on.

I'm definitely in that camp that dismisses anything this movie has going for it. Lots of talks by folks, back then, if they the studio was thinking about 'continuing' the series, Resurection would not even play a part of the history.

I've watched this twice. Hoping the 2nd time years later would have shone something different to me. It didn't.
