Aliens: 2 Disc Special Edition (Quadrilogy Set)

Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brEzYdLrPws

My copy of Aliens is coming straight from my Quadrilogy Set, so the above DVD cover doesn't represent what I have. I'm just using this as a place holder till I can find a suitable replacement.

As awesome as Alien is, I think the follow up is far superior. But then again, you really can't compare the two because the genre is different from one to the next. Alien is straight up a horror film that uses subtly to drive home the terror. Aliens is straight up a Action/Thriller film that hits you over the head with fire power. I personally just prefer the high octane rush of Aliens. Also, I think the cast of characters in this one is more engaging to the those that watch it. At least it is to me. Say what you will about Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) in Aliens. Sure, she got an Oscar nomiation for her role here, but you and I both know who the real star is: Hudson (Bill Paxton). I still think this is his defining role and one for the ages as he stole every damn scene he was in.

This movie is packed with memorable characters from Hicks (Michael Biehn), Newt (Carrie Henn), Bishop (Lance Henriksen) and Vasquez (Jenette Goldstein).  Even Paul Reiser gets in on the fun as Burke, the slimiest corporate stooge ever. Gotta mention Gorman (William Hope), a colossal f uck up that doesn't know sh*t about running a team. Ugh. Got to give a shout out to one of the greatest filmmakers of all time in James Cameron who has never failed me as a movie goer. They guy just knows his sh*t when it comes to writing and directing films.

This is a definite Buy. Now, I'm talking about the movie alone, and not the Set. It's really hard to justify picking it up when you have Alien 3 waiting in the wings, destroying everything about Aliens. I may or may not get around to watching that. It's hard to watch a film basically make Aliens pointless. Talk about dropping the ball.

I agree with your review of Aliens. Great characters. Amazing action and pacing. And yes, buying the box set is a waste of time.

I completely disagree with your perspective on Alien 3. And that’s OK. Lots of people walked away not liking Alien3. I understand. When I originally watched Alien3 in the theaters I was stunned and had those thoughts of not liking it. Over the years, I have come to find it just as good as 1 & 2, but in different perspective.

If you do decide to watch Alien3, maybe watch it with a new eye. I think the audiences we’re expecting Alien3 to notch it up. Aliens was better than Alien (because of the action), then Alien3 should have even more action than Aliens. If you think about it, that would be next to impossible, because Aliens was so good. Most likely repeating Aliens would be satisfying, it would be repetitive. Sometimes there is expectation of formula for sequel movies (Fast & Furious, Scream and Halloween, Mission Impossible). That’s fine for those goofy fun movies. But the Alien Franchise I want change. Aliens is quite different than Alien. I see Alien3 revels yet another new environment, new characters and story line. Albeit, not a pleasant one with killers and rapist on foreboding desolate planet. A lot of folks were royally ****ed of killing off characters from Aliens. Fincher quickly dismissed these characters (yet the Newt scene was incredibly heart wrenching), to get on with the new story. In my mind, these were all bold moves by Fincher. He was taking a huge chance and delivered the unexpected. I have grown too really like Alien3 with it’s new direction in the franchise.

Alien Resurrection (4)
is whole other story and complete fail in my opinion. That to can be discussed at another time.

Well, it's been a long time since I've watched Alien 3 so I have forgotten most of what's going on inside the film. But what I do remember of it really had nothing to do with wanting it to ramp up the action beyond that of Aliens. I'm all for going in a different direction. My biggest bone of contention was killing off Newt and Hicks....even before the movie started. It's hated by most because we grew to care about those two characters along with Ripley. So to kill them off, it made the 3rd act of Aliens kind of irrelevant. What was the point of saving those two if you're just going to kill them off at the beginning of the next movie? When the film started, I was floored, along with everyone else in the theater. You could literally hear people saying "what the f uck did they do"?

The other thing I remember of Alien 3 were the bad Special FX shots of the Alien Monster. It looked really bad, like a cut and paste job. There is a reason why the Aliens in the first two kick so much ass because they were shot on set with practical models. The ones in Alien 3 were CGI and very noticeable. Maybe they went back and fixed it, I don't know. I'll give Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection their own thread soon so that I can put the entire franchise in context.

Agree, the CGI bits were definitely low points of the movie. I don’t believe that has been fixed. And if you knew the backstory (tight budget and schedule) that would help a little bit, gloss over that move.

IMO, Killing off some of beloved characters not only added gut wrenching punch to the story, it added a new dimension to Ripley (losing her child), but it set the tone for the rest of the flick. I don’t think it makes Aliens irrelevant. Life just happens that way sometimes and it’s not always pretty. We already knew what she was going to face with the Alien, but bringing in these prisoner characters good and bad, opened up new doors. Again bold and risky. I works for me.

How Aliens Got The Green Light...

Quote
Cameron was young. He had just directed Terminator. Cameron had called a meeting to discuss his “next project.” Everyone knew Cameron had written a treatment for Alien 2 that nobody would touch because Alien was not a massive financial success. Alien 2 was not on the table. We expected a professional pitch from Cameron, an outline and a treatment of what he had in mind with a cursory budget; perhaps a couple assistants to run a slide show.
Instead Cameron walked in the room without so much as a piece of paper. He went to the chalk board in the room and simply wrote the word ALIEN. Then he added an ‘S’ to make ALIENS. Dramatically, he drew two vertical lines through the ‘S’, ALIEN$. He turned around and grinned. We greenlit the project that day for $18 million.

Honestly that sounds like an urban myth. Alien was a huge success, and then to believe nothing but words to grab the contract?

I have no idea if its a myth or not, but I heard about this story a long time ago and it does fit Cameron's personality. So I personally wouldn't dismiss outright. Besides, I like stories like this and I choose to say it's 100% real!!
