Almost Famous: Untitled (2000)

Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk0XnyrENrE

If you're a fan of Rock and Roll, a fan of Road Trips or a fan of Coming-Of-Age movies, this is absolutely the one to see. There is a charm that permeates the entire film that gives it a charm that you just can't find elsewhere. I think the cast here is absolutely brilliant and makes this what it is. We all know what to expect with the likes of Jason Lee, Billy Crudup, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Frances McDormand and Kate Hudson. But what's astounding is the film debut of Patrick Fugit in his first feature role. He nailed it and brings a wide eye wonder to living life on the road and doing the job he is meant to do, and that's writing for Rolling Stone Magazine.

I can't say enough good things about this movie. Sure, I may be a little biased here as  I was lucky enough to be able to watch them film some of the scenes at the San Diego Sports Arena. Its a trip whenever I watch the movie, how they made the San Diego Sports Arena look as it did in the 70's/80's. Brings back alot of of memories. I'd say about 90% of all the concerts I've seen were at SDSA. It's a shame that its no longer the destination of bands anymore when they come to town. Every once in awhile they will host a big name act.

Video is great, but the DTS audio track is f*ckin sweeeeeeeeeeeeet. Cameron Crowe went out of his way to make this movie as authentic as possible, right on down to capturing the sound of Stillwater performing "Fever Dog" at the beginning of the film. If you listen to this song, this is EXACTLY how it sounds at SDSA. Goosebumps. Be sure to crank the movie up loud when Stillwater plays. Hell, play the whole damn movie LOUD!

For this particular Director's Edition, it comes with the much longer version of the movie simply titled, Untitled. The 2nd disc is the originl theatrical version. There's a host of bonus material. And for good measure, it comes package with the Stillwater CD. Even though I watch this DVD exclusively, I still kept the original DVD release because some of the bonus material never got ported over and it's a shame too because they are quite good.

Definitely a Buy

Cool review. I've seen it when it originally came out but remember very little. Making note to self to watch it again.

I try to watch this one at least once a year and on some occasions twice.

Of course. Saw it because Jen was in it. I can't remember much of the movie though.

That movie I can remember more. Unfortunately I had somewhat of tough time with Wahlberg's rock star hair. Guess I associate him more sans the long hair.

Yeah!!!! This is one of my all time fav's. I've already git both DVD versions, better add this to the list.

I hope My Name Is Earl didn't ruin this movie for me. I might keep seeing Earl.

On Rockstar I just watched it a couple days ago. It's all right but towards the end where he walks off stage and gives the mic to the other kid is kinda lame. Almost Famous is 10X the movie.

Quite the opposite. Not once did I ever "see" him as Earl. Jason Lee is such a great actor, that he is Jeff Bebe. Just sayin'. It's just crazy that he got his start as one of the premiere skateboarders back in the day. Tony Hawk has got nothing on Jason when it comes to acting chops.

On a side note here's a cool song from RockStar

edit: I should clarify that being in your teens in the 80's might help you think this song is cool too.

Hey Wilson, you should be watching Rock 'N' Roll Fantasy Camp (Season 2) if your not already doing so.

Checked out Almost Famous last night. It's been a looooong time since I saw it. Rather enjoyed it... again. Definitely enjoyed how Crowe was able to capture the look and feel of the times.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but there actually was a group called Stillwater. Here in the midwest they had a cult hit with Mind Bender and Women Beautiful Women. They were big in the 70's for a little while

Anyway's it's just a coincidence I'm going through old KSHE Klassic songs and ran across this one

I'd never seen Almost Famous before  not sure why, might have been because Kate Hudson was in it, she's like Julia Roberts to me, I just don't like her. But Amazon had the newly released BR for $13 this past week so I picked it up. I was hooked on it from the opening scenes. The fact that it is mostly sort of based on Crowes time with The Allman Brothers band helps because you really want to believe that someone went through what this kid did. It makes you want to do it, unfortunately the music scene has changed so much that having quality acts producing music is a rarity with all the crap "musicians" making it big. It just doesn't take much effort to be a rock star now a days.

Kate Hudsons character is great, Kate Hudson, eh, not so much. I think any young actress could have done as good or better than her, but she didn't ruin this movie, it would have taken a much worse actress than her to do that. Its really a brilliant film from top to bottom. Usually a film has one or 2 defining scenes, this one the whole movie is the defining scene. I wish I'd had seen it long before this past week.
