Argo is arguably the longest wait I've had to endure in getting a copy from my
Library. Six f*cking months! That was a tortuous wait, but worth every minute of it because the movie more than delivered. I have a close association to the Real Events
Argo is based on. I was still in Elementary School when this all went down and it was the first time in my life that I suddenly saw something beyond the confines of
America. You could say it was my first political event, because up till that moment, it was all about Girls, Baseball and
KISS for me and up to this moment, I NEVER watched the News. The whole hostage crisis did do a number on me. I was so young and I was scared for the hostages. I wanted them to be returned home safe and sound. I was glued to the TV the entire time, waiting for when that moment would happen and I remember that day like it was yesterday. The joy and happiness everyone felt. It was an incredible feeling.
That's why I wanted to see this movie so bad. I wanted to finally get the complete story, one that we of course were denied for so many years because of the classified nature of the mission. The movie was everything I had hoped for and more. It was true to the time and era, it was exciting and it was very intense to watch, especially the 3rd Act when they must navigate through the airport and get to the plane and take off. I never thought the simple act of answering a phone could literally have me on pins and needles. When they finally fly out, there was this huge relief I had. And this with all the prior knowledge I had makes it all the more telling in what great editing can do to heighten ones senses.
Ben Affleck was fantastic both on screen and behind the camera. This kid is going to have a long, long, loooooooong successful career as a film maker. He hasn't disappointed yet. Check out
Gone Baby Gone and
The Town for further proof.
With a cast that includes
Ben Affleck, Bryan Cranston, John Goodman, Kyle Chandler, Alan Arkin, Tate Donovan, Bob Gunton, Philip Baker Hall and
Victor Garber, I highly recommend this as a
Buy.
Best Picture indeed. Who whoever thought the
Academy would get one right for a change? Well, they did drop the ball in not nominating
Affleck for Best Director. But that's a discussion for another time.......For the sake of addressing the historical inaccuracies, who the f*ck cares. I just saw a great movie and that's all that matters. If I wanted to watch a documentary tonight, I would have.
