I think there is a lot of expectations already prescribed. For instance when a flick garners a lot of attention like Saw or paranormal activity or what have you, that young audience wants more of the same. AVP though is not a sequel, it is a spinoff, and many fans of both have been just waiting. I don't think it fully delivered for the Alien crowd or the Predator crowd. There was this huge 'obstacle' Wes Anderson was facing. His name helped in many ways but as you pointed out, it hurt as well.

And as we know, most films get only one chance to make an impression (though DVD really provide a 2nd chance). It had some mixed feelings coming out of the gate and never found a good push.

Which brings me to a subject I've been thinking about. Concerning Hungar Games.
