Back to the Future Part III
The Complete Trilogy

Trailer

I love Westerns in general and I liked that Back to the Future Part III for the most part, is set in the late 1800's. It's a completely different movie from the first two films but it retains that tone and vibe of Back to the Future. Anyway, what I like the most about Part III is that for all intents and purposes, the movie is about Doc and his budding romance with Clara (Mary Steenburgen), who I thought was a great addition to the series. I really liked her character a lot and was the perfect actor to play opposite Doc. It was great the Christopher Lloyd got to carry the third installment in the way that he did. It's a bonus that we got a love story out of it as well.

Part I and Part II each gave us the best Cliffhangers ever. So, what could Part III do to make it memorable? Have everyone (Mary, Jennifer, the audience) believe that Doc and Clara are long gone, never to be heard from again and then have them appear out of nowhere on the track in a Train Time Machine. Winner! But reveal at the very end that the Trail can also fly. EPIC!! This was a great way to end the series and wrap up everything in a nice bow. Definitely a Buy.

You're really making me want to revisit the trilogy...

You mention the romance between Doc and Clara, I love that two, but the really sweet thing I liked is that because of that, Marty starts to become the responsible one while Doc becomes more impulsive and irrational, the dynamic swaps but they're still true to their character and it's believable because of the time we've spent with the characters through the first two flicks.

Of course, without the time-travel world-jumping of part two, this flick got to be ALL about characters, our last go into the BTTF-verse so we got to spend every minute with them instead of being shuffled from weird place to weird place and trying to get our bearings.  And many of the people populating 1885 were veteran western actors as well, so there's this extra sense of familiarity to the place, even if we're not sure why.

And is there any better single image from the entire series than Marty and Doc in front of the Clocktower clock from when that central pillar of the community was being built?  I love that, it just fits with the whole idea of the series, friendship through time like no one else could have had, how they've become part of the history of their town, plus it's this great way of referring back to Doc hanging off the clock face in parts one and two without recreating it.

The Time Train is brill, but I still can't wrap my head around actually having to make that and hide it and put it on the tracks, it's a real train!  And the design, it's got a great sense of whimsy (fitting, given that Doc is dressed like the Wizard of Oz at the end), the bat-like wings and the goofy spinners, and the giant versions of the coolant vents from the Deloreon.  And I'm not sure if you ever saw the cartoon, but in the animated series the "coal cart" at the back actually housed a back-up Deloreon, like a trailer.

You should revisit them. It's a great pick-me-up. Makes one feel happy.

Tell me about it... once my class and the film festival are over, I'll dig into them.  I don't think I'll have time beforehand.  I got so busy all of a sudden.

You know, the guy I mentioned in the past who's recreating all of 2015 in 3D, he noticed that the clock in Part III doesn't match the clock from Parts I & II.  I think it's the numbers, they don't align the same way.  Which I don't think anyone else would have ever noticed.
