Big Top Pee-wee

Trailer

It's no secret that I'm a huge Pee-wee Herman fan, as I've already pointed out. But even I can't approve of Big Top Pee-wee. It's just make no sense and "plot-wise" it's incoherent. Look, I'm not expecting any movie staring Pee-wee to have some deep meaning or epic story-telling. But what I do require from any character is that they have a motivation to do the things they do. Pee-wee has none of that here. Seriously, why does he have to be in the Circus? Or why does the Circus even have to put on a show? Now if Pee-wee was on the verge of losing his farm and was flat broke and this was a last ditch effort to save his farm, it would have made sense. It still wouldn't have made the movie any better, but you understand the point I'm making here.

I don't have any negative things to say about the character himself. It's Pee-wee after all. But for the rest of the characters that make up Big Top, they were boring and useless. I didn't like this movie when it first came out and I'm pretty sure this is only my second time watching this one. How do I know? Well, my jaw dropped when I saw a baby-face Dustin Diamond pop up in this one. Had I seen this movie after Saved By The Bell, I would have definitely remembered him being in this.

Anyway, even die-hard Pee-wee fans will be hard pressed to find anything worth sitting through this mess of a movie for. Definitely a Skip. The charm of the original is nowhere to be found. And speaking of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, I have no idea why Big Top Pee-wee is billed as a sequel. Huh? This one has nothing to do with the first one at all. Different premise, different characters, different location, different everything.

Big Top Pee-wee DVD Screencaps

You have a better chance of seeing the 3rd Pee-wee film getting made than you do have Screencaps from this one.

You know, I don't know if I've ever actually seen this one.  Apparently I'm not missing anything.
