It's kind of weird that the only connection I had to Black Sails was the original thread started by
Mac and the booth at
Comic Con that I got to attend, grabbing as much swag as I could in the process. But beyond that, I didn't have anything else to go on, avoiding any and all talk of the series and certainly staying away from critics reviews. I went into Season 1 thinking one of two things. It's either going to be stuck in 'Pirate tropes' popularized by the
Pirates of the Carribean franchise or it's going to be another cheap looking series given the fact that
Starz is behind this. Even though I enjoyed watching
Spartacus, it never elevated itself or distinguished itself as nothing more than a poorly executed Period piece for a quick buck and something I'd never watch again.
Black Sails on the other hand is not what I expected at all as it's both very rich looking in detail as well as story-telling execution.
I'm very happy with the end result and more to the point, I was immediately engage into the story within the first episode. Figured there would be the customary growing pains of having to get use to an assortment of characters. Didn't take long and once I got familiar with all the characters, I was along for the ride. When was episode ended, I had to start up another to see where they were taking this. The only negative I have about
Season 1 is how f*cking short it is. Only 8 episodes. I was expecting to get 13. I would have been satisfied with 10. But 8?! Way to short. I'm hoping that
Season 2 will have a bump in episodes because I am definitely on board with
Black Sails and I can't wait to get my hands on
Season 2. The show isn't perfect, but there is enough going on that you'll burn through
Season 1 pretty quickly. One thing that had me worried happens in the first episode and it was the gratuitous sex scene that pretty much made up all of
Spartacus. It was definitely cheesy, going for the lowest common denominator. After that, any sex scene that appears in the remainder of the season, was more "real" and not some lame attempt at soft-core p o r n . Definitely worth a
Rent.
