Based on the enthusiastic recommendation from
Mac, I decided to go with
Nowhere Boy tonight as my movie to watch. I had high expectations for this one, not just based on
Mac's recommendation, but the overall consensus of good word of mouth from the public at large. But I have to say that I was worried about this movie after the first 30 minutes because it wasn't delivering what I had built up in my head. I was expecting a
Beatles bio pic. That is not the case here. The story revolves around
John Lennon's (Aaron Johnson) early years, more specifically during his teen years and discovering who his birth
Mother, Julia (Anne-Marie Duff) is and the role that his
Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas) played in his life.
After the first half hour of the film, we do get to see
Lennon pursue what would become his musical legacy. I must point out that the movie isn't even about
The Beatles at all. There is none of that. It's about
John's first band
The Quarrymen and how his path crossed that of both
Paul McCartney (Thomas Brodie Sangster) and
George Harrison (Sam Bell). But the movie isn't really about
The Quarrymen either.
If you can get past the fact that this isn't a movie about the
Fab Four, you will definitely enjoy the movie. I liked it in spite of the fact that the name of the band itself is never mentioned in the movie at all. Great acting all around and I really think that
Aaron was fantastic as
John Lennon. Definitely worth a
Rent. Great soundtrack too. Also,
David Morrissey is in this one as well. He is currently best known for his role as the Governor on some tiny little show called
The Walking Dead.
