I bought Bubba Ho-Tep on DVD years ago just for the purpose of seeing Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley and Ossie Davis as John F. Kennedy. With a set up like that, the movie couldn't fail, right? Well, it kinda does. Bruce and Ossie are without a doubt the best things about the movie and it's a hoot to see them riffing off of each other. But the horror element about an ancient Egyptian mummy, a Ho-Tep sucking the souls of old people in a retirement home just comes off a bit too hokey and one that can't be taken seriously. The ending doesn't deliver and always leaves me feeling cheated in a way. This is one of those movies where I always thought that just the idea of Elvis and Kennedy working together in anything other than a "horror" flick could and would have been so much better than what we get here. As a horror film, it has never worked for me, but the idea of an Odd Couple type of film, it totally would have kicked ass. For Bruce and Ossie alone, this is worth a Rent.
