Melancholia

Trailer

Melancholia is both frustrating and exhilarating at times. This is basically a "disaster" flick or the last day on Earth. If you are expecting Armageddon or 2012, this movie is not for you. It's really about how you, me, everyone would handle the knowledge of knowing that you have one day left on Earth and what would you do with that day. Would you worry yourself to an early grave and try to do something that can "save" you or would you just accept fate and be at piece with it?

The concept of the movie is fantastic and made me look within myself and what I would do. It's actually something everyone at one time or another has thought of. Personally, I would just accept it and be with my family. Back on track. So why is this movie frustrating for me? The whole wedding thing came off very pretentious and was distracting, taking away from what the movie was really about. I get that Justine (Kristen Dunst) wants to experiences one happy moment in her life and having that wedding is her way to get that. Kinda. That's what I got from it. It's never explained what her issues are. She seems to come from a very  f u c k e d  up family and she acts and behaves very irrational during the first half of the film. It's only in the last half does she come off as being the most sensible with impending doom. The fact that it's never clear what's going on leaves me a bit  p i s s e d  off to say the least.

I do think the movie is overrated and really doesn't deserve all the acclaim it has been getting lately. Is this a bad movie? No. It's just incomplete in some aspect. Well, that's how I view it. I think this movie is a very subjective one and will get a different reaction from anyone. I would say it's worth a Rent if you have a lot of patience. If not, I think this isn't for you. The movie itself gets 3 Stars. A naked Kirsten Dunst gives it a half star bump. I did find it particularly funny that the music composer of the film literally marked her  n u d e  scene under the moonlight with bombastic music to punctuate the fact that she was naked. Unintentional humor of course. But you can't help but laugh at the scene when it presents itself. FYI, she looks AMAZING!

I think I may need to watch this again. I can't shake the movie from my head today.
