Boardwalk Empire (Season 5 - 2014)

Trailer

Season 5 of Boardwalk Empire is definitely different from previous seasons, especially the first two. Sure, it may look the same and still be set in Atlantic City, but the tone and feel is noticably at odds with what we have already seen. I actually thought I was watching an extended cut of The Untouchables at times.Another change was in the storytelling framing of Nucky Thompson and the one thing I actually applaud the writers for doing. For the first four seasons we hear a lot about not just his childhood, but also about the lives of predominant characters on the show like The Commodore, Gillian Darmody and of course Eli Thompson. Having the "flashback" scenes running concurrent with the 'modern day' story of Nucky was a great way to flesh out the characters. What made these scenes stand out more is the fact that they never came off gimmicky in the way most flashback scenes are. There are no tinted scenes or abstract transition wipes that most rely heavily on.

I actually found myself more enamored with the Flashback stuff then I did with older Nucky Thompson and everything that was happening around him. Even though this was a somewhat different season by comparison, I still enjoyed it for the most part. I do however have issues with how the writers handled most of the main characters and that was the disregard they had for the characters. While watching this shortened season of only 8 episodes, I kept being reminded that I saw the same thing with Oz. It's like the writers were lazy and didn't care enough to figured out how they should end each character arc and just decided to kill them off one by one, the fastest way to move on. Sure, this may be based on a true story, but they changed things up and were not beholden to telling a factual narrative. Killing them all off was just weak. They easily could have given one or two a happy ending. As for the Series Finale,it was a no-brainer that Nucky would meet his fate in the way that he does. Saw it coming a mile a way. I did like how they merged the flashback scenes and the modern day scenes into one at the end. It was almost poetic in how it all came together. Worth a Rent for sure.
