I absolutely love, love, love
Bowfinger! I saw this a couple of times in the theater and have since watched this probably around 20-25 times on dvd since picking up a copy when it first hit the streets. The movie is just so damn funny. You have to take the film with a grain of salt as it was written and shot entirely with tongue firmly in cheek while ridiculing everything about and associated with Hollywood in general. Nothing is safe here as
Scientology (aka MindHead) and
Tom Cruise are ripe for ridicule. Even
Eddie Murphy as
Kit doesn't escape the jabs. But at least he was able to have fun with self deprecating humor as he is basically playing a stylized version of himself as
Kit.
There are scenes with
Murphy as
Kit that are incredibly funny, but it's
Eddie Murphy playing
Jiff that basically steals the movie. Other than the
Shrek films, this is the last great live-action comedy that
Murphy has been in and this came out in 1999. How sad is that? If this does end up being the best we will get from him comedy-wise, at least he went out a winner. Not to be outdone is
Steve Martin as
Bowfinger, the filmmaker that decides to make a movie with Hollywood's biggest star....without his knowledge. I'm a sucker for 'behind the scenes' movies about Tinseltown and
Bowfinger is one of the best. Rounding out the cast is my girl
Heather Graham. She is funny and awesome in this one, playing an Actress that basically sleeps her way to the top all in the effort to get more scenes in
Chubby Rain.
FYI, the ending is still about the funniest thing ever when
Jiff, Bowfinger and the rest of the gang make '
Fake Purse Ninjas'. The "fight" choreography still cracks me up to this day. I own this bad boy on dvd. So, you know I'm recommening this as a
Buy for you peeps.
