The Karate Kid (2010)

Trailer

I am very protective of movies that I consider to be the best of all time and the original Karate Kid is definitely in that rarefied class. It had everything going for it and has stood the test of time. It's a movie that you just don't **** with. So when I heard that they were remaking it, I was livid. I wasted no time denouncing all those associated with the picture and was ashamed that Jackie Chan of all people would attach his name to this. I refuse to accept that it was getting made and trashed it whenever I got the chance. I never went to see it in the theater.

So, that brings me to here....and now. I finally decided to go ahead and watch what was sure to be a train wreck of epic proportions, in spite of hearing that it got solid reviews by most people. But that's them. I don't care what other people rate it. I'm going into this movie with the intention of trashing it regardless. And then a funny thing happened along the way while watching The Karate Kid with Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. It was good. Actually, it was really good. I thought they did a great job with the cast and the writing. This is a worthy entry into the Karate Kid franchise and should definitely make you a fan of this one easily. My only problem with the remake is in how young the kids are. But other than that, I have no problem with it. Well, maybe one other thing... they should have put in Joe Esposito - You're The Best somewhere in the flix.  ;D

I had originally planned on watching the remake as part of my recent Karate Kid Marathon. But the Library dropped the ball by delaying sending me my copy of the movie by a week. No one had it on hold, so I thought that I would have gotten it by the time I finished off The Next Karate Kid. Anyway, the marathon is still fresh in my memory that I can finally placed this within the original four and give it some context of how it holds up.

Right off the bat, the remake plays even better this second time around. Why? Gone is the baggage of trying to compare it to the original classic from 1984. Here, I can just watched the movie for what it is and what it is, is awesome. I just think Jaden's performance is heartfelt and genuine, the same goes for Jackie Chan. The bonus for me is watching Taraji P. Henson. I have become a huge fan of hers from Person Of Interest and when I originally watched the remake, I really didn't have much invested in her as a fan. But now, it just feels like I have seen her in everything and she is great in them all.

I wouldn't object to them making another one to pick up from the remake. All I hope for is that it's an original story where they take it someplace new, whatever that may be. No need to remake The Karate Kid, Part II. Just expand it and bring something new to the franchise. If they do decide to make a sequel (or two), I hope they do it soon. Nothing would be odder than seeing Jaden with a growth spurt where he packs on 30 pounds and is 4 feet taller than he is in this film.

I still stand behind my original review.
