Captain Phillips

Trailer

About the only thing I knew about Captain Phillips was that it was based on a real life event, that Tom Hanks was in it and that a lot of accolades went to Barkhad Abdi who eventually got a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Other than that, I was coming into this with no prior knowledge. This has been on my Hold List for quite some time. The movie does start out slow, but if you stick with it, the intensity starts to elevate higher and higher the deeper you get into the story. Overall I thought this was a solid movie and the 3rd Act alone makes it worth checking out. One thing surprised about the movie is that the most pivitol scene, the one that absolutely nails it comes at the very end when Captain Phillips (Tom Hanks) is being tended to by the ships Doctor. Watching him kind of losing it, trying to comprehend what has just happened and thinking only about whether his family knew he was safe made my eyes well up. I was not expecting that at all. I'm a baby. Definitely worth a Rent for sure and I agree that Abdi was fantastic in what is his film debut.

One thing that I thought was cool was that when I was watching the movie, I kept saying to myself "this looks like a Paul Greengrass movie", and that's meant to be a compliment to him. Paul has a certain style all his own and this fit right into it. So beyond watching the movie, I was actually waiting for the end credits to see who the director was and sure enough it was Greengrass. And no, I never bothered to look at the front or back covers of the DVD to see who the director was.

I've got this sitting on my media center as we speak. Hope to watch it in the next day or two.

Thanks for the heads up about a slow start. Make sure we stick with it.

I came away from this with nothing but Meh. No reflection on Tom Hanks. I think only his performance was worth watching. Despite  Barkhad Abdi acting, which I thought was just OK, I found Captain Phillips a very thin story that had to fill 2 hours. Yes, the drama was intense... at times. For me, I saw the captors including the Captain as don't do anything.... or they will kill you. Which translates into nothing but self fear because you are at their mercy. As a viewer of the movie, I felt no fear or apprehension. Maybe that could have a little do with know what happened. And I do remember the events well. That was a time of lot of pirating and thinking, how is that happening today.

I thought the 2nd act had the most tension, but once they got on the little boat, it just floated... literally and figuratively.

While I'm glad I finally got to see it, I know I have no desire to watch it again.

Oh, the whole movie with hand held camera definitely ticked me off.
