Can't Buy Me Love

Trailer

Man, I haven't seen Can't Buy Me Love in yeeeeeeears. I was a big fan of the movie when it came out and for me it was very relatable as I was in school at the time and got exactly what they were going for. Who hasn't ever wanted to be the most popular kid in school? Who hasn't wanted to date the most popular girl in class? Who hasn't wanted to have other kids worship and follow you with other hot chicks throwing themselves at you? Of course this was a big movie when it came out and me and my friends would talk about those very things it used as the hook for its plot. We loved it for that very reason. But in my eyes, what set this movie apart from most other High School flicks is that it actually had something to say and that of course is that "becoming popular under false pretenses is hollow".

It's better to just be who you are and have people accept you, warts and all. No amount of fake popularity can ever replace knowing that others like and enjoy being around you for who YOU are and they show the good and the bad of what happens when you get what you wish for. I like that Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) gets his redemption at the end after treating his real friends like sh*t once he becomes popular, and that his Best Friend was able to do what he couldn't....make a Cheerleader fall for him just by helping her with Geometry. The movie is definitely a product of the 80's from the clothes to the music and I love it. But I also love it for another reason: Amanda Peterson. I had a MAJOR crush on her because of this movie. It sucks that she has all but disappeared off the face of the Earth.

There are others in the movie that are sure to ring a bell if you saw a picture of them if the name doesn't jog the memory. For me, this movie was my first introduction to them as actors. Patrick Dempsey, Seth Green, Courtney Gains, Eric Bruskotter, Gerardo Mejía and Max Perlich. I knew that Patrick and Seth would have long careers, but never in a million years did I think that Seth would become as big as he has. FYI, Seth steals every scene he is in in Can't Buy Me Love. Very funny stuff. Speaking of pulling a disappearing act, whatever the hell happened to Tina Caspary and Darcy DeMoss? Anyway, this movie is great. Definitely worth a Rent for anyone that is a fan of the High School genre. Very underrated flick.
