The Call

Trailer

Having just tortured myself watching Catwoman, I wanted to give Halle Berry another chance in a movie that I've never seen before. The Call has been on my radar for quite some time, but I never had the chance to get to it.....until today. Before I jump into my review of what the final cut of the movie is, I gotta at least mention what I figured the movie would be. Personally, I questioned how they could hold my suspence for a full 90 minutes given the premise, which by the way is good. The other thing I question is how does an operator have her moment with the Villain that doesn't have her on the phone. She can't. It would have been super weak if Halle's character stayed on the phone the entire time and had a proxy (Cops) taking down the Big Bad. There would have been no payoff whatsoever. Those were my thoughts going into the film.

So, how does The Call actually play out to what I envisioned in my head? Pretty much a spot-on duplicate. But to my surprise, the film holds up extremely well as they are in fact able to keep the suspense going for the majority of the movie. I was kinda pleased to see that Halle would in fact have her moment to redeem herself by coming face to face with the killer. Everything was clicking as it should be and then the final scene happened. When Halle and Abigail Breslin's character decide to dish out their own brand of justice, I was like "F*ck yeah!!". The problem is, the movie just ends abruptly. I hate this kind of sh*t, especially for this movie in particular. The entire time I was watching this, all I kept saying to myself is that the killer is gonna get his comeuppance by both main characters and it's gonna be awesome. So, to be deprived of that, given the amount of torture Abigail had to go through and Halle's emotional baggage was just a huge let down. Up until the final scene, I had this pegged as a 4 Star movie for sure, in spite of implausible scenarios. It was fun and entertaining. But that last scene makes it a 3 1/2 Stars at best. This could and should have been so much better than what we get at the end. Worth a Rent at least.
