Citizen Kane
Two-Disc Special Edition

Trailer

When I first saw Citizen Kane (as a kid in Elementary School), I hated this flick. What would you expect coming from someone that grew up on Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark? Of course the flick wasn't going to play well with me and it should come as no shock that I never got very far in watching Kane as I turned it off fairly quickly. It would be years before I ever watched Kane again when it finally came out on DVD. I bought it then and watched it that day. I finally understood why Kane is highly regarded. Obviously I didn't see this flick when it came out, but I can put into context of how 'revolutionary' Orson Welles movie was at the time with all the camera tricks, angles, dolly and tracking shots. crane shots, transitions, story structure, etc....

Tonight is only the 3rd time I've seen Kane and it's still pretty damn impressive and definitely a movie that any amateur and pro film maker will learn a thing or two from it. With that said, I can't rate this as the "Greatest movie of all time'. Maybe back in the day it was the Holy Grail of movies. But that was then and this is now. I can rattle off 20 movies off the top of my head that I consider to be 'Greater'. But I can and do understand how influential Kane has been on cinema in general and for that, it does warrant some of the accolades it still gets. It's just not in my Top 20 movies of all time and it really has to do with the story itself. It's an interesting story, but I've never really been able to connect with the title character and it can seem somewhat disjointed at times due to it's narrative structure. But it's still definitely worth a Rent.

One of a number of classics I've never seen.
