Dances with Wolves

Trailer

I love Westerns and Dances with Wolves is definitely in my Top 3 of all time. There's really two types of Westerns for me. One is the Gunslinger out to rid the Scoundrels wreaking havoc on the town and then there is Dances with Wolves. Even though Dances with Wolves does have some "gun fights", the movie is more about the way of life of the Sioux, Native American's. But what makes this movie really shine in my eyes is watching sworn enemies which has John Dunbar (Kevin Costner) and Kicking Bird (Graham Greene) coming together, learning to trust each other and then eventually becoming true friends, ones that would give their life to protect the other. I can't even think of another Western that has used that plot device.

Also making this movie work for me is Mary McDonnell as Stands With A Fist. I love her in this and to this day I still refer to her by her Indian name, no matter what movie she is in or whether I'm watching Battlestar Galatica. She will ALWAYS be Stands With A Fist to me. She just nailed the role and I honestly don't think the movie would have been as good if she wasn't in it. Beyond the 'name actors', there is a certain charm that I still get from watching the lesser known 'actors' that make up the Tribe. The old people, the kids, the warriors, they all add so much life to the movie. Even Wes Studi as the main antagonist from the Pawnee Tribe was fantastic.

Fantastic cinematography which caught some amazing looking scenes that belong in a museum, hanging on a wall. It's that gorgeous. I still own one of the early 'Bare Bones' DVD. It's time for me to upgrade to whichever Deluxe Edition that have now. I don't have a problem double dipping on this one. Highly recommend this as a Buy for you folks.
