Deja Vu (2006)
« on: May 29, 2013, 11:30:56 pm »

I'm a huge fan of both Tony Scott and Denzel Washington and they do make a great team in the movies they make. But I gotta be honest here, Deja Vu did not live up to what I hoped this movie would be. I don't know what the general consensus is among the public out there is regarding the film, but Deja Vu was all over the map for me. I went though a series of reactions toward the film. Highs and lows if you will. The opening half hour, I really dug, even if it was playing out like a typical forensic cop show as they try to piece together enough evidence to solve the mystery of the explosion. But then the movie did a 180 and introduced the "satellite imaging" technology.

Suddenly my mood went from, "hey, this is gonna be a good mystery" to one where I'm just not buying into the who technology of what it "can and can't do". A little later into the movie, another twist is thrown at both Denzel and us, the viewer when we find out that the "tech" is actually a worm hole and what we are seeing on the screen is actually 4 days in the past. Are you with me so far? I'll just skip past all the jargon and say that I really didn't like any of what takes place during Act 2. And Act 1 was kind of a bust because of the switch.

So, was there anything I liked? Yeah, I did like pretty much all of Act 3, since it was the most 'linear' story telling of the entire movie. Who doesn't like a race against time to save hundreds of people? I did like how the roles are reversed by the end between Denzel and Paula Patton's character. Suddenly she knows the secret and he may be the 'disbeliever' in the new altered scenario. I did like the cast that included Val Kilmer, Adam Goldberg and Jim Caviezel. But I just can't shake Act 2. I would have preferred that they used conventional detective work instead of relying on a "cheat" that is the technology to get all the evidence they need and use. But then again, that does take out the whole 'time travel' angle of the film. I guess I should say give this a Rent, because I'm gonna have to re-watch this in the hopes that it plays better the second time around. And no, it's not hard to follow, if that's what your thinking. But you will definitely have to suspend your disbelief at the door for this one. I'm giving this a very generous 3 Stars.

Never felt the need to check out this film... and honestly, you're the first person I can think of that actually saw it.  Which is a bad thing to say with this director and star.

Grabbing the Trailer from YouTube, I read some of the comments, and I was surprised to see how much people "love" the movie. Scratching my head on that one...........
