Derailed (2005)

Derailed
Widescreen Edition

Trailer

In a word, Derailed sucks. The only reason why I even decided to check this out is because I remember all the talk back when the movie first came out that this movie was a huge departure for Jennifer Aniston who finally made a conscious decision on her part to do something that wasn't a Rom-Com. Yes, this is definitely something new for her (at the time), but that doesn't necessarily mean the movie was any good. It wasn't. There was nothing wrong with Aniston's part, but the trailer and the Print Ads seriously misrepresented themselves by hyping this as "staring" flick for her. She's barely in this movie at all, which leaves Clive Owen the one to carry the movie.

The problem with having him shoulder the burden is that his character is a f*cking joke. There is such a huge disconnect for me toward his character that it basically derailed the movie from the start. Why the f*ck would I care what happens to him when he decides to cheat on his wife? Why would I give a f*ck about him when he decides to use the money that is to take care of his daughter's medical bills to pay off the Extortionist? Why the f*ck would I care anything about him when he gets his friend killed because he doesn't have the balls to stand on his own two feet?

For a "Thriller", this one is about as boring as it gets. I was struggling to finish the movie. The first twist that comes at us is painfully obviously. I saw it coming a mile away with its set up. But it's the second twist that is just beyond ridiculous. Definitely a Skip. Don't waste your time on this one. I got gypped on this movie for sure.

I'm more surprised by the dramatic turn for The RZA and XZibit.  Never had any interest in this movie (despite LOVING Clive Owen) so I'm glad to hear that I'm not missing out on anything.

I think RZA is hugely underrated as an actor. I enjoy pretty much all of his stuff, big or small. He always plays interesting characters and he was of course awesome in Californication. XZibit is good too. You might wanna check out Gridiron Gang.

I really SHOULD watch Californication.  But I do remember quite liking an interview with him on Colbert (which is incidentally how I first found out how to pronounce it as "Rizzah."  Which is really funny when you consider that Colbert pronounces his OWN name wrong).

Californication is f*cking awesome sh*t!! You will never look at David Duchovny as Mulder again. He is and will forever be Hank Moody......Motherfuuuuuuuuuuucker! <----- Inside joke. Watch the series and you'll get it.  ;D

He's still the guy who took my hotel room to me.

I do remember on the X-Files that Mulder didn't have a bed (until Morris Fletcher got him one) and had a closet full of po rn o mags.

Speaking of Aniston and her choice of movies... why, why, why... does she keep doing what she does. Despite this NSFW trailer, this is yet another ho-hum, possibly very bad movie to add to her resume. She had so much potential and continually keeps blowing it. So is it her... her agent? What?

I love Aniston, but I think it would be a smart career choice to return to TV. I don't think she is suited for movies. Even if she had the best agent in the world, I don't think it would matter. Some people are made for films and some for TV. She belongs in the later. Just as the rest of her Friends co-stars. I think a lot of it has to do with being typecast and no matter how "dark" they may portray on the big screen, they will always BE those characters we all know and love.

I get what you're saying about being 'those' characters. I'm not sure she necessarily fits into that. Yes, her Friends co-stars do.

Maybe you're right. She doesn't have the range. My wife and I were just talking about her and her career choices. I brought up George Clooney who has done a phenomenal job of picking movies and characters. He was made for the movies. And then you have Katherine Heigel, who has just completely blew it for herself. Maybe she's like Aniston? I thought she would be great for films, but I guess not.

Good call on Clooney and Heigel. I agree. But for Aniston, because she has done so much of the same thing, she needs to play against type and she needs to be seen on a consistent basis. I think the best thing she should do is a series, one like Sons Of Anarchy or Justified or Dexter. Just look at how amazing Katey Sagal is in playing against type. It would and could have been so easy for her to get typecast as Peg Bundy. Now, I can't even picture her beyond her role in Anarchy. Aniston would benefit with something that can have adult content, keep her face out there on a regular basis and definitely one as part of an ensemble with amazing writing, story and character. If she would do that, she could be huge again and definitely change the way people view her.

Even though it was a flop in the ratings and didn't survive beyond a 2nd season, I thought Courteney Cox was great in Dirt. Even though Matt LeBlanc is basically playing "Joey" in Episodes, he is fantastic in this and want to see the series continue onward. Because he isn't the star carrying the show, he gives him and the viewer room to breathe.

Speaking of Katy Sagal, think about Bryan Cranston and Thomas Haden Church. These folks apparently have the talent to be great characters. So yea, they step up with the skills.

Haha. Yes it did, but we are still talking about Jen in a way, if not about the movie itself. But yeah, Bryan redefined his career with Breaking Bad and that's all Jen needs. Just that one series to give her career a boost and then she can try and revisit the film career down the road if she so desired.

And of course, TV these days is so good... you gotta figure Aniston could own an FX or Netflix Original series.  But what would you want to see her as?
