My Bad

Finally, I get to watch Season 5. The wait for this at the Library was unbearably long. So....

I was really uncertain how they would open this season after the stunning cliffhanger at the end of Season 4. Would they pick up right where they left off? Would it jump directly to Rita's funeral? Would it be 3 months or a year later? Well, it literally picks up at the end of last season with cops swarming over the house. Leave it to Dexter to blurt out "it was me". Not something you should be saying when you are alreadly Prime Suspect #1.

The episode was different from your typical Dexter episodes. Not that it's a bad thing, just that the entire hour was devoted to the fallout of what went down and the reactions of co-workers and the FBI looking at Dexter differently as if he was already guilty. The fact that he wasn't showing any kind of emotion did not look good at all. When he did finally break down and let it out, it was a bone chilling scream that raised the hair on my arm.

I thought it was pretty cool to intersect flashbacks scenes into the episode of Rita and Dexter's first date together. This was pretty enlightening in that we see how they connected to each other, but also that even then on their date, Dexter was still Dexter when he excused himself to go do what he usually does. Looking forward to the rest of the season and seeing how it plays out, now that he has to care for 3 kids on his own.

Hello, Bandit

This was a very slow episode. Still stuck in the aftermath and what to do about it. Well, it seems that Dexter's load just got a bit lighter now that Astor and Cody have been shipped off to live with their Grandparents. Not sure how long this is gonna last, but my guess is that we won't be seeing much of the kids from here on out. Maybe an episode or two at most. But I think this is just a way for the writers to free themselves up and not have to worry about how to juggle all these characters at once.

So it looks like we have Dexter's next Serial Killer foe lined up, played by Shawn Hatosy. At least I think this will the the Season Arc. Naw, I think Dexter will be done with Boyd Fowler inside of 2 episodes. He doesn't strike me as being in the same "league" as Arthur Mitchell (John Lithgow). The only way I see him going the whole season is if Dexter will be "studying" him.

Practically Perfect

Yeah, I knew that Boyd wasn't going to be around long. He actually didn't even make my prediction of at least 2 more episodes. So far, this season is a bit under whelming. Coming off the epic seasons of Jimmy Smits and John Lithgow,  the show was bound to have a drop off of some sort. Right now it's missing that star wattage both brought to their roles. Hopefully they have something big lined up for the rest of the season, but my guess is that maybe the series peaked. Not writing Dexter off just yet as they may surprise me...just a little concerned they may have blown their wad is all.

The ending was interesting though. Dexter is now in a sticky situation in that unbeknownst to him while killing Boyd, one of his Hostage victims played by Julia Stiles was watching the kill from another room. So, how is he gonna handle this? If he stays true to his code, he can't kill an innocent victim, but if he lets her live, she knows his secret which puts him in harms way.

Beauty and the Beast

Okay, we may just have something here. The entire episode was basically about taking a 'Leap of faith' for Dexter. Rather than getting rid of the "problem" in Lumen (Julia Stiles), he decides to set her free. Not without a few tense moments mind you. But by the end, we learn that she can't or won't return home because her father (implied) is just as bad as Boyd. So, it looks like Dexter will become that 'Knight in shining armour' for her. This could definitely get good. Does he end up fixing her problem, and do I see her falling for Dexter? It's quite possible. Even though Dexter is not her captor, she could very well end up with Stockholm Syndrome.

First Blood

I was off about Lumen's (Julia Stiles) past involving her Father. I did say it was 'implied'. Anyway, seems that Lumen is looking for 3 other guys that have ties to Boyd. Now the season is starting to ramp up with Lumen now on the hunt for those 3 so that she can get the justice she is owed. A little hiccup though....Dexter. So far, he has been ahead of her every step to thwart her brand of justice. But now that she has convinced him that she has left Miami and returned home, this is going to become very interesting in who reaches the end first. Dexter did make a mistake though. He told Lumen his real name. Tsk, tsk. Like that isn't going to come back and bite him in the ass later.

And about that star wattage I thought this season was lacking? Seems we got something big brewing with the addition of Peter Weller as Stan Liddy, a dirty cop that gets taken down in a  p r o s t i t u t i o n  sting operation, headed by Lt. Maria LaGuerta. He is out for blood now and somehow ends up getting offered a job by Quinn to dig up Dexter's past. Quinn is going down a rabbit hole that is sure to get him killed. Doakes anyone?

Everything Is Illumenated

Awesome episode and the first one this season to really nail that high tension feeling that the best episodes in the series have. I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire time during the whole "tracking the blood drops to the body" sequence. There were so many variables working from different directions that I couldn't sit still the entire time. Now that Lumen has gotten her hands dirty and shot one of her captors, it's up to Dexter to help her get out of this dire situation. Only problem is, the body is missing. So tracking it is one thing, but factor into this that the Cops are in route to the crime scene and Dexter has his latest victim stashed in the back of his car, you can imagine the level of tension throughout this one.

I knew that Dexter and Lumen would  eventually have a moment where she would open up and bare her soul and in that moment, he would show empathy and agree to help her track down the rest of her captors. We get that scene at the end of this one and the scene was  done really well. So much so that you could see that they, for this brief moment anyway, had a connection with each other.

As for the rest of the cast, I thought Vince Masuka "expert" analysis of the crime scene at the warehouse was about the funniest damn thing I've ever scene. Hahahaha. On the other side of the coin, I'm not digging the whole Deb / Quinn hookup at all. It's just.....weird.

Circle Us

There is something oddly compelling and fascinating about Lumen and Dexter bonding. First as partners to catch and hand out their judgement, but more importantly their personal....'affection', maybe? I don't know exactly what it is that's happening between them, but for Dexter to introduce his son Harrison to her says a lot about how he is feeling about her. A friend, yes. But I think it's something more, but he just doesn't know it yet and neither does she. I do see this turning into a romance down the road for sure.

I thought it was pretty cool that Lumen came to the rescue of Dexter when Cole attacked him in the house. I just wasn't expecting her to get such a thrill out of doing it after the fact. She could possible be turning into a serial killer if I didn't know any better. Fantastic episode, but they need to kill two relationships right now. End the Deb / Quinn mash-up and end the Angel / Maria debacle that is their "marriage".

Take It!

Holy crap, this season is getting goooooooood!!! Really good. It's different from the first four seasons because it's so unpredictable this season. So much  s h i t  went down in this one. First you have Lumen getting attacked.....again, by Cole. That could have done even more damage to her psyche, if that was even possible. How could she ever feel safe again? On top of that, you have Lumen helping Dexter prep the room and then actually getting to stand in with Dexter for the kil and then disposing of Cole's body at Sea. The ending was kind of a catharsis for her, seeing her in a way putting the pieces of her life back together...feeling safe for a change. This is where I thought they would end the episode...on a "happy" note. But no, they kick it up a notch to reveal that Liddy has been spying on them shore, taking pictures of the both of them getting rid of the the body. Sheesh!!

Another great twist in this episode was Deb. It was no shock to see that Maria threw her under the bus to save her own ass with regards to the Nite Club shooting. But to find out that it wasn't Angel that backed Maria's story, but was in fact Cira Manzon (April L. Hernandez), the one person that Deb went to bat for so that SHE wouldn't get thrown under the bus herself, completely surprised me.

Awesome episode!!!! AWESOME!!!!!

Teenage Wasteland

Another awesome episode. This is cruising along at an epic pace. So far, the last few episodes have been money and the ending here was a stunner. I still don't know how Jordan Chase was able to even find out that Lumen was staying with Dexter. I can't recall any scenes where he could place her and Dexter in the same room. The only thing that comes to mind is if Dan The Dentist, the guy that Lumen shot earlier, when he was on the phone telling (unknown) caller about Lumen being alive that he said she was with (describing Dexter's appearance) Although he never described anything, I'm guessing this is part of the phone call we never heard.

I can't think of any other way he would know. I don't think the blood that Chase found on his necklace tipped him off to anything. In fact, now that I think about it, I'm thinking Chase has always known and was using the "help Dexter with his grief" as a ruse to get close to him, study him and learn what he can. That's my guess.

Astor returns! I knew she would come back eventually, just not as a troubled teen with tons of makeup and a bad attitude. She looks totally different, as if it were someone else all together. I really liked the ending when they had their moment together, bridging their gap and he telling her he loves her. It was a very touching scene.

Quinn is up  s h i t  creek now. Deb knows about him trying to dig dirt up on Dexter / Kyle Butler, which kills his relationship with Deb....for the time being anyway. But now he has to deal with a loose cannon in Liddy, who is still looking to dig up whatever he can on Dexter and bring down the Department regardless of collateral damage. This  s h i t  is getting even better than I'd hope.

In the Beginning

Man O'man! I can't take any more of this!! I'm holding my breath the entire time, waiting for the other shoe to drop. This is highwire tension that never lets up. The entire ending nearly made me pass out. When Lumen and Dexter were in their Kill Room with Alex Tilden doing what they are suppose to do on the show, I was freaking out because, unbeknownst to them, Deb and Quinn were literally right next door looking for Alex and I was certain they would find them. Deb is a force to be reckoned with. She's come a long way from Episode 1 in the Season 1. She truly is a Detective that knows her  s h i t .

Having Deb piece everything together was pretty damn cool. She was able to break it down to that of a vigilante that is seeking justice. On top of that, she was able to pinpoint it on an escaped victim, which of course is Lumen. Something in the way that Deb reacted to all these victims kind of backed up a theory that I have for how the end of this season will conclude.

A few episodes back, I came up with a scenario that would free everyone involved. What I see happening, with Quinn especially, the closer he gets to finding the truth about Dexter's secret, Quinn will come face to face with what happened to Lumen and that she was the 13th victim and in that moment will understand why she has sought out to kill her captors. He will discover that Dexter has been helping her and come to realize that there is a loose end that needs to be tied up: Liddy. It will be Quinn that will have to clean up this mess and will dispatch him to keep Lumen and Dexter's secret safe.

That's what I came up with a few episodes back, trying to write an 'out' for everyone. Sure, it's pretty outlandish, but I'd like to see it play out this way. That way Lumen can have some peace and live happily ever after. The last scene was really cool. At least one of my theories came true with Lumen and Dexter finally getting together. I've never seen two people more perfect for each other.

I'm still trying to figure out what the relationship is between Jordan and the first "victim", the one that who'd blood he wears around his neck. My guess....his sister.  F u c k e d  up doesn't even begin to describe it if that is in fact what it is.

Hop A Freighter

I don't have a  f u c k i n g  clue how this is going to wrap up. All I want is for Lumen to live happily ever after and have a normal life. But something tells me she is not going to have that happy ending. I think Lumen loves Dexter enough to even sacrifice herself to save him, which means she will throw herself in harms way. With Lumen now in the clutches of Jordan Chase, it's looking more and more likely that she....

Ugh. I don't even want to think about it. I really like Julia Stiles in the role of Lumen. She has been awesome the entire season.

Well, we don't have to worry about Liddy anymore now that he is out of the picture. That's what you get when you kidnap Dexter. A blade to the sternum. Liddy's phone conversation with Quinn in front of Dexter may just end up saving Quinn's life since he got the impression that he had nothing to do with the kidnapping. I dunno. This could go in so many different directions.

One last episode left. I'm excited and sad at the same time. Excited to see the conclusion to what has been just as good, if not better than the previous two seasons. Sad that this is the last episode for Season 5.

This just hit me now. The only "out" for Lumen is that somehow Quinn ends up at the same place that she is being held captive and sacrifices himself to save her. Eh? Maybe? Bah! Not likely. Dexter is on the way to save the day!!

The Big One

Well, Lumen got the happy ending that I so wanted for her. The look of relief on her face, riding the boat into the moon lit sky said it all. She was finally free. Free to start her life over. But this is Dexter afterall, so I couldn't really enjoy the moment like she was clearly enjoying it because I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. Sure enough, the next morning, Lumen had to end her relationship and move on. It was inevitable because she couldn't start fresh if she had a constant reminder of what she did and what happened to her. With Dexter around, she would always be forced to relive it.

There was one scene in particular that had me  p i s s i n g  in my pants because I thought this was the moment of truth where Deb finally discovers Dexter's secret. When she stumbled upon Jordan Chase's body and "saw" the two people behind the plastic sheet separating her from them, I was sure that Dexter would step out and reveal himself. But Deb being Deb, empathized with #13 (Lumen) and lets her and her boyfriend (Dexter) walk without ever seeing either one's face. So, this grand reveal will have to wait another season.

Now about Quinn. I kinda knew that he would be saved at the 11th hour by the hands of Dexter and that he would contaminate the blood on Quinn's shoes so that it would tie him to Liddy's murder and I'm glad. As annoying as Quinn can be sometimes, he does bring a lot to the team and if he were to leave, it would kind of mess up the dynamic of the department. Really cool to see Cody and Astor back and it looks like they will be living with Dexter once again...at least for the Summer anyway.

Dexter (Season 5)

Overall, I really enjoyed Season 5. I've noticed that the first couple of episodes for the last few season are usually slow and usually don't rate as high. I know they have to take the time to set up what is to come later in the season, and even though this season wasn't any different in that aspect, the finish was spectacular. Julia Stiles did an amazing job. To me this is the best thing I've seen of her in any role she's done. I just wish it was for more than just the one season. So, where do I rank Season 5? That's really a tough call. Season 3-5 are by far the best in the series that I've seen...so far. It's really hard to place this, but I think it's just a tad behind Season 4, and maybe just a tad ahead of Season 3. I highly recommend this as a Buy.

Re-watching Season 5 tonight. I already talked about this episode in the first post, but I do need to comment again on it. I'm really glad that they spent the entire first episode dealing with Rita and all that came with it. I think it would have done this season and probably the series itself a huge disservice if they had just glossed over it just to get Dexter back to hunting / stalking / killing.
