Dexter (Season 7 - 2012)

Trailer

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4GfsaYk-9k

For my money, Season 7 was a redemption for the somewhat unfocused and lackluster Season 6. This one had a clear narrative and one that redefined what the show is now. With Deb now completely in Dexter's corner, no matter what the cost is to her own sanity, the series and the their relationship will never be the same as it was before. I have always thought that the real star of the show (no disrespect to Michael C. Hall as Dexter) was and is Jennifer Carpenter. She has been fascinating to watch as Deb. If there was ever a character to want to watch day in and day out, it's Deb who has been flawed from day one. This is a character that all writers would want to create and write for.

The entire season just felt right for me, even though it has taken a hard left from where it was last season. I have an idea of where it's going with the eighth and final season. But I'm just as excited to see it unfold anyway. And given that the writing has always managed to trip me up.....in a good way that is, I know I can be in for a few more surprises along the way.  Wanted to also say that I thought both Yvonne Strahovski and Ray Stevenson were great in their respective roles. As for the series, welcome back, Dexter! Definitely a must-Buy.

Are You...?

I wasn't planning on doing episode reviews for Season 7 of Dexter, but I couldn't pass up on the chance to comment about what takes place in the season opener. So, I recently finished watching Season 6 and the final scene, the cliffhanger of when Deb see's Dexter killing Travis has been replaying in my head over and over. It actually left a very uncomfortable feeling with both characters with me and I really didn't know one way or another how the Season Premiere episode was going to deal with this. In my head, I kinda figured and suspected that Dexter would be able to talk his way out of it and convince Deb that it was all in self-defense.

Well, that's exactly how Are You....? opens up, picking up right where Season 6 ended. I knew that she would "believe" him because she needed to believe him. Her fragile mind wouldn't be able to cope with the idea that he willingly killed someone else, especially after her relationship with the Ice Truck Killer. I also knew that she would ended up helping Dexter burn down the Church to get rid of all trace evidence (all but one very incriminating blood slide that is).

The entire hour of Are You....? left me feeling somewhat shaken because I was very sympathetic to what Deb was dealing with, wanting her to make things right and understanding why she was suddenly questioning everything, replaying key moments in her mind over and over. Her suspicions were clearly on display and I knew that she would start to do off-books investigating of her own as she starts piecing things together. What I didn't see coming was Dexter returning to his house at the very end of the episode to find Deb sitting  among the ruins of his apartment with his knife kit on the table in full display and more importantly his blood slides. Holy sh*t! There is no way for him to talk his way out of this one and when Deb ask him "Are you......a Serial Killer?" and he simply replies "Yes", left me wanting to see more. Damn, Now THAT's a cliffhanger. Can't wait to see what comes next.

My guess is that the next episode will be Dexter retelling all the details about their father Harry, his code, Brian Moser, Trinity, Luman and Travis. And then it will be up to her to decide what to do next.

Sunshine and a Frosty Swirl

Well, Deb's reaction went pretty much how I had envisioned it in my head. Having her puke her guts out and the realization that Dexter is a serial killer and that their father Harry had a hand in shaping him when he was a kid is exactly how it should and did play out. I'm also not surprised that she decided to take on the role of Harry by getting him to move in with her so that she could give him a new code to follow, which I actually like. The other story arcs are just as interesting, especially the one involving Louis. I really want to see how this plays out. I was certain that he was a goner once Dexter threw him in the trunk of his car. But I like that he is trying to change for Deb's sake. It won't last long, obviously. It can't.

But I kind of have an idea of where this season is going. Dexter will tow the line for as long as he can, but there will come a time where some perp....most likely Issac is going to get away with murder and Deb will basically unleashed Dexter on him to do what he does because Issac is about to get away scot free, never to be heard from again.

The other interesting thing that is playing out is that Maria LaGuerta having found the blood slide at Travis' crime scene now has proof that Doakes was not the Bay Harbor Butcher. The case will blow up one way or another and it's going to be about sabotaging the investigation, either at the hands of Deb or Dexter.

I'm only just 2 episodes into this season and it's already better than last season. It remains to be seen if they can sustain this. But I will say that having Deb know Dexter's secret has changed the dynamic of the series in a huge way and for the better if you ask me, They can't go backwards now as we are treading new ground with the series. I like it a lot.

Buck The System

That didn't take long at all. Episode 3 has Dexter basically bringing Deb along to show her what it is he does when it comes to vetting one that may turn out to be a serious bad guy. Of course she doesn't agree or go along with it and in the end, it ends up costing the life of an innocent girl. This epiphany opens Deb's eyes, but she is still not on board with what Dexter does, but you can now see that she is straddling the fence, something that I wouldn't have suspected so soon into Season 7. This bad guy will be the one that Deb sics on him to take out the garbage. Probably the second to last episode. Just a guess. Another solid episode. Bonus points for adding Yvonne Strahovski to the cast. Me love her long time! Hated to see Louis go the way he did. It would have been fun to see him and Dexter trying to sabotage each other the entire season. But, Louis' blood on Dexter's boat is going to have huge ramifications no doubt and the one time that Dexter is totally innocent of any wrong doings.

Run

Man, the tension between Deb and Dexter is f*cking intense and has been dominating the season so far. Just when I thought that Deb had finally reached the breaking point, threatening to take Harrison away, forcing him to move out of the house, verbally cutting him down every time they share words with each other. Along comes the ending. With Dexter killing Speltzer and then calling Deb down to the cemetery to share in his death by pointing out his "smoke", she comes to admit that she is 'glad' he is gone. Now of course Deb is going to think there is even more things wrong with her. Even though she has accepted this little thing Dexter did to him, I think there is still going to be some issues between them and that she will never be on board with this. Certainly not 100% anyway.

Swim Deep

Great episode for a couple of reasons. First off, we get the reveal that Yvonne Strahovski's character is just like Dexter....a cold blooded serial killer and that she was just as complicit in the killing spree that her then-boyfriend got all the credit for. Really not sure where her story is going to go. Will Dexter hunt her down and do what he always does to killers? Or is this the start of a romantic dance? I'm going with the later since he basically derailed the investigation by lying about her involvement...to save her. We shall see,

This episode finally addresses Quinn's dirty-cop background. We always knew he was dirty at one time with a shady background. So, when he "accepts" the bag of money left in his car, we can only think one thing. My guess is that he will do the right thing because his character seriously needs a redemption so that we can root for the guy. Right now, not so much.

Loved the cat and mouse chase that Dexter and Issac are currently engaged in. Can't wait to see where this goes. As for Deb, it looks like she will turn a blind eye to Dexter's..."activities". She just doesn't want to know about it anymore. It's eating away at her. The rest of the season will definitely have her questioning everything. But will she do anything to stop him? Probably not until the Season Finale, which goes against the idea of her siccing Dexter on the Big Bad Dude that is Issac.

Do The Wrong Thing

The ended was somewhat easy to see coming, only because I'm not even at the halfway point yet. So when Dexter strapped Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) just as he's always done before killing them, I knew that he wouldn't be able to go through with it. And I kinda knew that she wouldn't beg for her life but would just be stone-faced about it. I guess this was a turn on for Dexter because the next thing you know, they are going at it. As for Yvonne Strahovski being naked on the table, I don't think it was her, but a body double.

Solid episode that is heating up in more ways than one. LaGuerta's investigation is heating up as well. Now she is looking into the 5 Barrel Girl's case. It was about time that Deb asked Dexter about Lumen. Took her long enough. I'm kind of surprised that she hasn't questioned him about Doakes and gotten details about that.

Great writing, especially with the set up. But even greater writing by switching it up when you expect it to go a certain way. I previously said that there would come a time during this season (season finale was the episode I picked) when Deb would sic Dexter on someone to get justice (Issac was the person I picked). Well, Deb finally reaches out to Dexter and gives him her blessing to take out the garbage. The twist is that she wants Hannah 'taken care of'. It was ironic that she tells him to do that, not knowing that he was sharing her bed at that very moment.

Deb just can't seem to catch a break in the men she chooses to be with. As soon as their romance got off the ground, Hannah made sure to deal with him her own way by poisoning him. It's just bad luck that he would drop in Dexter's apartment of all places. Yikes. And he is innocent of that! Who knew. Elsewhere, LaGuerta is getting closer and closer to uncovering the truth.....

"You're a serial killer and I'm more f*cked up than you!". This is probably the greatest line from the series ever and it comes on the heels of Deb finally professing her love for Dexter and one that took me totally off guard. I wasn't expecting it because it looked liked they had been phasing it out since the beginning of the season. Or maybe my mind just didn't think Deb could or would go there knowing all of Dexter's dark secrets and her feelings were immediately in reverse. But then again, as Harry says, she has covered up all of his crimes and lies since that fateful night because she's in love with him. It feels weird and oh so wrong. I really wish they weren't going down this road. It does make for a great story though....albeit a creepy one. The ick factor is off the charts.

Talk about a growth spurt! Cody and Astor are big now! I wasn't expecting to ever see them back on the show again and they were missed last season. It was great to see them return. I hope they are back for the duration of the season. Not likely. But at least keep them around for a few episodes at least. The ending epilogue does show Deb and Astor smoking weed together, so it's not like they were sent packing by the end of the episode. One big moment also came to light during the epilogue and that LaGuerta now knows that Dexter had his boat docked at the same port before moving it to a new location when Miami Metro was closing in on the Bay Harbor Butcher.  Poor Quinn, he is falling deeper and deeper into the rabbit hole. It's not gonna end well for him. I think he will be done by the end of the season. There's really no point to character being around anymore. He was marginalize last season and even more so this season.

Helter Skelter

Kind of weird to see Dexter and Isaak suddenly working together to take out two hit men sent to kill him. I was expecting a big showdown between the two in the season finale. Who would have ever guessed that it would be Isaak that would convince Dexter to surrender to the idea of loving someone unconditionally (Hannah). I should have suspected that he would meet his demise in this one once they established the Arsonist Killer or whatever they decide to name him...or her. I wonder if it's someone that we have already seen during this season or someone else entirely new. Leave it up to Deb to save Hannah's life. I also like that LaGuerta sought out Tom Matthews to help solve the Bay Harbor Butcher case. Good reason to bring him back this season, but I think Matthews already knows that Dexter is the one and has been keeping his secret all along.

The Dark.....Whatever

Well, they got rid of the Arson Killer fairly quickly. I thought for sure this would be the killer to take us to the end of this season. But now it's clear that they are ramping up Hannah's background story a little bit more. But its LaGuerta and Matthew's private investigation into the Dexter as the Bay Harbor Butcher theory that will come to a boil by seasons end. Will it end during the Season Finale? Probably not. It's most likely going to carry over into the next season and be the basis of a huge Man Hunt for Dexter. That's how I would write it, knowing that Season 8 is the swan song.

Even though Matthews is acting "shocked" at the idea of Dexter being a serial killer, I'm still convinced he has always known and that he will try to warn Dexter. If he doesn't know, I still think he will warn him just to get back at LaGuerta for f*cking him over and getting him sh*t-canned from Miami Metro.

Do You See What I See?

Fantastic episode. Two story-lines running concurrently to each other and each delivering for me in a big way. Which one to address first? I'll start with Hannah. I like that Deb is super protective of Dexter. Hell, she has already proven that by covering for his homicidal ways. Duh! But her sisterly love has gone up a notch. Nothing was revealed, but I am 100% positive that Deb purposely planted a strand of Hannah's hair in her own house, drugged herself and then purposely crashed her car all in the hopes of convincing Dexter that she tried to kill her, much like she did with Sam Price. Well, it worked. Dexter gave Deb evidence the evidence that she needed to arrest her. Sh*t is gonna hit the fan when Dexter finds out what Deb did!! Well, this is all speculation on my part. Otherwise this is gonna be egg on my face!!

The other story that has been fun to watch is LaGuerta continuing to try and prove that Dexter is the Bay Harbor Butcher. I totally bought it hook line and sinker that her manhunt was over once they found Doakes "boat" with evidence that proved HE was the Bay Harbor Butcher. So imagine my surprise when it was revealed that LaGuerta engineered the release of the last man that had a hand in the death of Laura Moser...Dexter's mother. This is getting goooooooood.

Surprise, Motherf*cker!

What an awesome episode and one that's incredibly sad. Even I wasn't sure where it was going until it happened. I really did think for a second that Deb was going to shoot Dex (in the leg to take him out of commission). So yeah, even I was shocked to see Deb turn the gun on LaGuerta and kill her. But it was her immediately running over to embrace and cry over her that left a lasting impression. So, now Deb is a killer. I get that she would do anything to protect Dexter, but does this signal the start of her becoming a serial killer? I really don't see how she can ever come back from this. It's not like she is going to suddenly be able to forget what she just did and go on and have a normal life. As for Hannah, she escaped from police custody. So, count on Yvonne Strahovski returning for the finale season.

Also, it was awesome to see Erik King return as Sergeant Doakes, albeit flashbacks. Ever since his demise, I have long suspected that he would return one day. I wasn't expecting him to pop up in this one at all. I should have caught the clue that he would, which was right in front of me....the title of this episode: Surprise, Motherf*cker! Ack! Anyway, awesome episode that changes the playing field yet again. Can't wait to see the final season. Downside is that it's going to be a long wait for it to hit DVD.
