If you have never seen
Tru Calling before, the best way to describe it as '
Groundhog Day with a Supernatural kick'. I've watched this series plenty of times and even today, it still holds up incredibly well. As good as the season is as a whole, it didn't really take off till the later half of the season with the addition of
Jason Priestly. That's not to say that the first half wasn't as good. It's just that there were more stand alone stoeies with the hint of something much bigger under the surface. But when
Jack (Priestly) arrives, the series took on a completely different tone, a very dark and sinister mood was suddenly infused within the series.
Tru (Eliza Dushku) spends each episode 'rewinding and starting the day all over again' when a deceased person calls out and ask her for her help. So, she sets about basically trying to prevent their death. That's basically the plot. But along the way, the writers started dropping hints of something bigger. Slowly we learn that
Tru's mother had the same abilities until she was murdered, which
Tru witness at the tender age of 8. We later learn that
Tru's father actually knew the killer and more importantly employed him. But the biggest bombshell comes at the end when we find out that
Jack answer's to
Tru's father, revealing that he too was at once time the "Grim Reaper", which is what Jack is as he tries to hinder
Tru from successfully preventing death. If you have never seen this, buy all means give it a
Rent. It's a fantastic show and one that I will never sell. It stays in my personal DVD Library for a reason.
Be on the lookout for a then "unknown"
Zach Galifianakis, along with
Shawn Reaves, A. J. Cook and
Matthew Bomer.
