Dexter (Season 8 - The Final Season - 2013)

SPOILER ALERT*SPOILER ALERT*SPOILER ALERT*SPOILER ALERT*SPOILER ALERT*SPOILER ALERT*SPOILER ALERT*

I've been looking forward to the Final Season of Dexter for a long time, especially after the EPIC cliffhanger from Season 7. There was no way in hell that I would not return to see how everything played out. This was at the Top of my List of things to wrap up as quickly as possible. Before I get into the review of Season 8, I gotta point out that Dexter as a series is beyond fantastic. It's very rare for a 'procedural' show to transcend the genre and take it to another level that really stays with you, long after the end credits have rolled. Originally when I watched the first 5 seasons of the series (before I had even seen an episode of Breaking Bad), Dexter was in fact in my mind, THE best written show ever for me. Since I don't have Showtime, I have to wait for the seasons to be released on DVD and even though I did a great job of avoiding spoilers, there was one thing that I couldn't avoid and that was the overwhelming negative reaction to the series finale episode. I've never heard that many people sh*tting on how the series ended. This left a bad feeling in my stomach. Even though I was happy to finally start Season 8, there was a sense of dread, waiting to see exactly how it ended that permeates the entire season with a negative vibe for me.

So, I will just jump right into the final episode and say that it does indeed SUCK. Everything that has been said about it holds true. They couldn't have ended it any worse than what we get here. To say that I'm disappointed is putting it lightly. The ending doesn't even make sense. More on that in a bit. Gotta back up and touch up on Deb. The fact that they killed her off makes no f*cking sense at all. If you have watched every season, including the events that transpire in Season 8, you will know that she was THE character that deserved the happy ending. To quote Shawshank Redemption, Deb "....crawled to freedom through five hundred yards of sh*t smelling foulness I can't even imagine". She was suppose to come out clean on the other side. She EARNED it. So, to kill her off deprived every fan's wish to see her finally get everything she wanted at the end. F*ck.

Now for what really p*sses me off about the final episode. With Dexter killing Deb, by showing her mercy and taking her off life support, which I saw coming a mile away, it's what Dexter does next that infuriates me. He takes her body from the hospital, puts her on his boat and rides out to sea. And then he dumps her body in the ocean? Why the f*ck is he doing this? Seriously, I want to know. He loves and cares about his sister and would do anything to honor her memory, but this is the most disrespectable thing he could have done to her. He is basically dumping her body into the same ocean floor with all the other bodies that he has killed and disposed of over the entire series. THIS does not and will NOT ever sit right with me. Horrible writing and totally against the character of Dexter and their relationship.

As for the "ending", it's lame. So, Dexter, feeling the guilt of what happened to Deb, decides that he is going to end it all by 'Suicide by Hurricane'. So off he rides into the mother of all storms. He wants to end it so that he doesn't bring anymore danger into the lives of Hannah and his son Harrison. I guess that make sense and maybe that's where the series should have ended. Should have faded to black right here. Nope. The epilogue shows that Dexter is alive and working in (what looks like Alaska) as a Lodger. He comes out from work, sits down at the table with his full beard and stares right into the camera. Fade to black. Doesn't make sense. Why would he make Harrison an orphan? Even though he is "protecting" him by staying out of his life, his a lame ending to an otherwise amazing series. The ending SCREAMS potential movie franchise. Only one problem though. The writers wreck any chance of that happening because the entire season was and is about the relationship between Dexter and Deb. A movie wouldn't work and as much as I love the characters that make up the series, I absolutely do NOT want to see a movie happen without Jennifer Carpenter as Deb. She IS the STAR of the series.

As for the rest of Season 8, it started off a bit slow. The actors seemed to be phoning it in. It wasn't as compelling as seasons past. But it did pick up during the second half. The Brain Surgeon isn't on the same level as John Lithgow and Jimmy Smits characters. Those could never be topped. But the Brain Surgeon did turn out to be entertaining, even if there wasn't anything entirely original about him. Okay, with the bashing I inflicted on the last episode, I still would recommend this season as a definite Rent. And in spite of the sh*tty ending, I will say that Dexter as a series STILL comes in just behind Breaking Bad when it comes to the greatest TV Shows of all time.Definitely Top 5. I just wished the ending had a better and fitting ending to it. Is that too much to ask for?

Shoulda, woulda, coulda.

With that said, I will no doubt tune in to see what becomes of the Spin-off if it ever gets off the ground.
