Is the 1st and 2nd by the same director?

Even then, look at Pitch Black & Chronicles of Riddick. Though not books, the stories, look and feel diverge to not even resemble each other. Studio? Same Director? Money?
I'm sure it happens all the time.

We already know how it's a crime studio's take the last book and split it in two, thus making up stuff as they go along.
