Cape Fear
Collector's Edition

Trailer

It has been awhile since I last watched Cape Fear and no matter how long it has been, you can never ever forget Robert De Niro's insane performance as Max Cady. The movie begins and ends with the dude for good reason. Both De Niro and the character he plays are mesmerizing to watch. You can't take you eyes off the screen whenever he is on. One thing that I always find to be fascinating about watching this particular story is that there are times where I end up rationalizing what Cady is doing. Yes, he is a horrible, monstrous being and an admitted rapist, but you can't help but want to see Sam (Nick Nolte) get his comeuppance. He is a lawyer (strike 1) that basically f*cks Cady over 14 years ago (strike 2), sending Cady to prison. He is also a horrible husband that cheats on his wife (Strike 3). Everyone knows that lawyers suck. But to have one that purposely tanks your case (even if it is for good cause given his past history), wouldn't you be just a tad p*ssed off too? Of course you would.

This is a great movie with a stellar cast  that marries the golden age of cinema with the new breed. I love the fact that Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck and Martin Balsam have cameos in the remake. If you don't know, all three were in the original. Along with these heavyweights, you have  Jessica Lange, Joe Don Baker and in her film debut....Juliette Lewis who holds her own against De Niro. Is De Niro's performance over the top? You betcha! Is it any less entertaining? Hell no! There is a reason why this movie is parodied so much. Everything the movie memorable. From the fast camera zooms, quick editing, fantastic score and the character of Cady, it was ripe to be a source of inspiration. Whenever I do watch Cape Fear, I can't help but have flashbacks to the ultimate remake of this remake and that of course is the episode of The Simpsons with Sideshow Bob in the role of 'Max Cady'. This is definitely worth a Rent. Martin Scorsese ftw!
