Desperado (1995)

Desperado is definitely a sequel to El Mariachi, but it's also a remake of the film as well since the plot is essentially the same. But in spite of it using the same beats, I'm still okay with the movie and that in large part has to do with the awesome (and very fun) new cast of actors. Front and center, this is Antonio Banderas movie and he does a great job of playing the 'Mariachi'. Along with The Mask of Zorro, this is one of Banderas best movie roles. Every movie hero needs a leading lady and you can't top Salma Hayek who has never looked better than she does here. But her character of Carolina is also very likable as well. More than just eye candy and is someone you want to see get what she wants.

This is a Robert Rodriguez film, so you know it's going to be populated with quirky, off-beat characters. The cast of actors is a who's who of well-known faces: Cheech Marin, Steve Buscemi, Tito Larriva . Joaquim de Almeida, Danny Trejo and Quentin Tarantino who by the way is f*cking hilarious here. I'm also glad that RR actually had some of the actors from El Mariachi appear in this one too: Carlos Gallardo (the original 'Mariachi'), Consuelo Gómez (Domino), Jaime de Hoyos (Big) and Peter Marquardt (Moco),

A lot of great gun fights and set pieces. You can clearly see that RR was channeling John Woo films made popular by Chow Yun-Fat. There is a homage going on here, but RR is definitely adding his own flair and style to make it his own. As I said in my review for El Mariachi, the Desperado DVD is also a 'Film School' on disc as well. The extra also includes another installment of 'Ten Minute Film School' as well as the Director Commentary. Buy this movie! It's great. Love the trailer. It's simple and effective in getting across what the movie is.  ;D
