Chips review did spark some interest in watching this again. I know I had seen it but recall very little if anything. When I saw the opening credits, some of the fuzz was lifting and when I saw Tony Scott, I started to get a little apprehensive. Tony Scott is known for his visual style and story telling. Some just nail it where some I was completely put off by it.

Enemy of the State falls in the middle. Scott creates extremely energetic movies. EOTS actually exhausts me. Once things start to kick in with the running, chasing, dodging, it does not let up. This movie is just packed with a variety of stars. Will Smith, Jon Voight and Gene Hackman are just a blast to watch. Watching it today and not when it came out, I found Jack Black and Seth Green just oddly cast. I probably would have not thought that before they moved onto their comedic roles.

I have a big problem with EOTS from the very beginning. Yes, yes, yes, I’ll forgive the over the top technology of surveillance… no I won’t. The scene of the bad guys reviewing surveillance footage in a lingerie store and extracting data from projected views was just silly. But the scene where Jason Lee is picking up his nature surveillance video footage, yards across a lake from an intense crime review scene, where Lee does not see all the activity and they don’t see him and what he is doing is absurd.

From then on was kinda of alerted to plot holes, major leaps of faith, etc.
Enemy of the State is a fun movie with interesting characters. But it is a tad long and get tiresome to stay involved.
I say… rent.
