Enemy Of The State

Trailer

Been a long time since I last watched Enemy Of The State. I love this movie and it's one of the better Will Smith films on his résumé. It's been so long in seeing this film that I had forgotten how stacked this movie was with recognizable names and faces. Some were still wet behind the ears, some became huge stars and others are still trying to "make it", i.e. Jamie Kennedy. A run down of who's in this one: Will Smith, Gene Hackman, Jon Voight, Barry Pepper, Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Regina King, Tom Sizemore, Scott Caan, Jason Lee, Seth Green, Jason Robards and Philip Baker Hall . Pretty damn impressive cast if you ask me.

If you enjoy Thrillers, you absolutely can't go wrong with this one. It is a tight, action packed chase film from start to finish and it has a great call-back scene to a situation that you all but forget about by the end, and then when it presents itself, you get satisfaction at how they swung it around. I won't say much else or it would ruin it for those that have yet to see this very underrated film. This is a Tony Scott film and it does have one of his "famous" go-to endings. If you don't know what I'm referring to, just think of the 'mexican standoff' at the end of another one of his films; True Romance.

I highly recommend this as a Buy. You will find that this movie is more relevant today than it was when it came out in 1998. The fact that Big Brother is invading more and more of our privacy now makes this film more of a cautionary tale. Ah, too late........

Might have to check it out again.

Chips review did spark some interest in watching this again. I know I had seen it but recall very little if anything. When I saw the opening credits, some of the fuzz was lifting and when I saw Tony Scott, I started to get a little apprehensive. Tony Scott is known for his visual style and story telling. Some just nail it where some I was completely put off by it.

Enemy of the State falls in the middle. Scott creates extremely energetic movies. EOTS actually exhausts me. Once things start to kick in with the running, chasing, dodging, it does not let up. This movie is just packed with a variety of stars. Will Smith, Jon Voight and Gene Hackman are just a blast to watch. Watching it today and not when it came out, I found Jack Black and Seth Green just oddly cast. I probably would have not thought that before they moved onto their comedic roles.

I have a big problem with EOTS from the very beginning. Yes, yes, yes, I’ll forgive the over the top technology of surveillance… no I won’t. The scene of the bad guys reviewing surveillance footage in a lingerie store and extracting data from projected views was just silly. But the scene where Jason Lee is picking up his nature surveillance video footage, yards across a lake from an intense crime review scene, where Lee does not see all the activity and they don’t see him and what he is doing is absurd.

From then on was kinda of alerted to plot holes, major leaps of faith, etc.
Enemy of the State is a fun movie with interesting characters. But it is a tad long and get tiresome to stay involved.
I say… rent.

All the plot holes you pointed out are 100% correct, which is what I picked up on in the theater. But I know what to expect from Tony Scott and usually just check my brain at the door and strap in for whatever ride he is about to take me on.
