Troy
Two-Disc Special Edition

Trailer

Since I'm still in my Game of Thrones mode, I figured now would be the best time to knock out another 'Sword and Sandals' flick that I've never seen before. Troy has been on my radar for quite some time now, namely because Brad Pitt is in it. Other than that, I didn't know or had forgotten that Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom were in it as well. But it was a few other actors that kind of surprised me given their association with Game of Thrones. It was kind of cool to see Sean Bean and James Cosmo in the movie. Fans of the series will know immediately how big their characters are to the mythology of Thrones. So, in a way, I kinda like Troy more than I really should.

When Sword and Sandal epics are done right, you have Gladiator, when they are done wrong, you have Kingdom of Heaven. For this one, I have Troy in the middle of the two. I think Troy is a solid addition to the genre, but I think it's weaken because it's a bit unfocused in its narrative. Exactly who is anchoring the film? Who's story is it that we are meant to follow? This isn't a TV series that usually has a handful of arcs being told simultaneously. This is a movie and there needs to be one clear protagonist. They hyped this movie as a Brad Pitt vehicle, but in actuality he comes off as a minor character for pretty much the entire movie when so much time is devoted elsewhere.

Like I said, it's a solid flick and it does get a lot of the other things right. Definitely worth a Rent to check out. But if you are looking for something a bit more focused with a clear objective, definitely go with Gladiator instead.

A little observation about Orlando. He seems to have cornered the market on anything involving Bows & Arrows or Swordplay. Lord Of The Rings 1-3, Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3, Kingdom of Heaven and Troy. With all these to his credit, I'm surprised that he hasn't found his way into Thrones yet.

and ya know I saw it and remember *nothing.  :-\

* except the one scene (probably from the trailer), of Pitt attacking his opponent, camera angle low looking up. Which they've used scenes like that on occasion in Spartacus, the series.

I know your a huge fan of Spartacus the series. How did it hold up with the new guy in the lead role? Is it still worth checking out from the Library? Or did the wheels come off and lose something with the transition from to the other?

They were very aware of the change, especially to the audience.

I think they did a fantastic job. It is consistently good through the series and each episode.
