Dogtown and Z-Boys
Special Edition

Trailer

Dogtown and Z-Boys is an exceptional documentary tracking the rise and fall of the Z-Boys who gave birth to what would one day become Xtreme Sports. There would be no Tony Hawk or Shaun White, if not for a group of kids in the 1970's that took a simple "kids toy" and turned it into something else all together. This is by far the premiere doc on the subject, written and directed by one of it's own; Stacy Peralta. Leading the film some star wattage, the narration is provided by Sean Penn himself. I have a personal interest in this in that I got the skateboarding bug because of the Z-Boys and I didn't even realize it until years later when I picked up this DVD.

The doc is broken up into specific sections, kind of like it's own Chapter selections and when it got 'Del Mar - 1975', I had a major out of body experience because I was there. Sure, I was just a kid and it was by chance that I was even there at all. My Mom went to the Del Mar Fairgrounds for another thing that was going on at the same time. But I remember that day like it was yesterday and watching these kids skate. It was unreal. I'd never seen anything like it before. I knew what skateboarding was, but it wasn't until that day did I ask for and got my own skateboard. I've watched this movie so many times just so that I can search all the available footage and see if I can find myself and my Mom in the background. So far I haven't had any luck.

Anyway, I highly recommend this as a Buy. Even if you don't skate or have never skated in your life, you will definitely enjoy this. It's always fun to revisit the 70's and see what the clothes, cars and music were like of the time. Everyone on the team gets there story told, from Tony Alva to Stacy Peralta to Jay Adams and the rest.

Top 10 Pro Skateboarders

Good list, but I feel that WatchMojo missed the mark on a couple of skaters. Where's Shaun White? Where's Jay Adams?
