Mallrats: Collector's Edition (1995)

Trailer

The best thing going for Mallrats is Jason Lee as Brodie. Whenever he is on the screen, he steals it. If it weren't for him, the movie itself would be a total wash. But somehow he is able to elevate the movie with his views about everything from sex, love, comic books and escalators. The best part of he movie is definitely the game show at the end where he takes center stage as he comes up with some of the best answers and stories any contestant has ever uttered on live TV.  ;D  The downside of the movie is definitely Jay and Silent Bob. Where they were charming in Clerks, here they were annoying and playing caricatures of themselves, which fell flat.

Even though I own the movie, I can't say I'd recommend it as a Buy. But it's definitely worth a Rent though.

Did Kevin Smith Just Hint at “Mallrats 2″?

Since nothing has been announced officially, I will post this "Clue" here.

All I can think of is that Smodcast where they're doing Scan BC and talk about the dead body outside of the Old Navy at the PM mall.  It's a bo-dee, and it's dead... and it's behind Old Navy!  And the song that they sing about it.  That's the only story I can picture Mallrats 2 being, a Canadian Stand By Me style prequel.

So much for Kevin Smith "retiring" from the movie business. Now, I'm obviously happy that we are getting a Clerks III, but something tells me that hinting about doing MR2 , Smith has now entered the stage of his career where he will just mine as much money as possible from everything within his View Askewniverse and that includes Chasing Amy 2-5, Dogma 2 and 3, Revenge of Jay and Silent Bob, Clerks IV-X. Just sayin'.

Well, he's always said that he's not that creative, that he was just telling stories about his friends and life experiences.  So I really can't fault him for going back to the well the same way I could someone who's a genuine fountain of ideas who keeps treading water or not growing as a director or storyteller even though they claim to be.

And Mallrat was.... I don't even want to THINK about how long it was, but I was in Rome, which is my benchmark for "old."  So it's not like he's pumping them out one after another like the Hangover movies.  And there's a marked difference between Clerks and Clerks II, and Clerks II was almost seven years ago already.

The thing is, I know Kev Smith is kind of a wh*re for money, but that seems to be more for his appearances, he'll show up anywhere, act in sh*t, whatever, but he seems more responsible with his IP, otherwise he would have sold the sequel rights and whatnot ages ago.  I don't know how much he makes from doing the podcasts and from all his appearances, but the money he makes on the movies can't be exceptionally more than that, he's not commanding seven figure salaries or anything like that.  Plus you gotta figure the actualwork involved, it's much easier for him to tour with his podcasts or host shows than it is to write, produce, direct, and edit an entire feature film after scraping together the budget from investors and sh*t.
