Flashdance

Trailer

I had forgotten why I haven't watched Flashdance in what amounts to 15 years at least. The movie is just incredibly boring and dull. Story? What story! At the time, it wanted to be the next Saturday Night Fever. But those behind the making of Flashdance failed to realize that you need a story for that to actually work and shocking as it may seem, having characters actually say something....anything, would go a long way to getting it started. But that's not what Flashdance is. It's nothing more than one giant "music video" where Jennifer Beals character goes from one scene to the next, which has no bearing on what came before.

Speaking of scenes, I also forgot how poorly edited this movie was. There are some really bad cuts where a scene just ends when it shouldn't. Also, the scenes are very very short for the most part. Here's an example of one of the scenes: Alex (Beals) and her Mentor are shown going into the theater to watch a Ballet performance. Cut to them giving the dancers a standing ovation. Cut to Alex and Mentor leaving theater. Really? What the f*ck is that all about?

Look, with a name like Flashdance, I wasn't expecting much of a plot anyway, even back when I saw this opening week in the theater. You go into this movie expecting to be wowed by hot naked women. It just doesn't deliver in any way shape or form. When this first came out, every one was gaga for Beals and her "dancing". Shortly afterwards, word got out that it wasn't her dancing at all and that the director relied on a body double for all the "good" stuff. Kinda ruins what made the movie passable at the time. Now it's just movie without a plot and a star.

The only good thing in this movie is Cynthia Rhodes dance number and some of the songs used for the Soundtrack. That's it. But still definite Skip.

I had totally forgotten how crazy, artsy and WEIRD all the dance sequences are.  They've got wayyyy too much production value and thought to them (recreating the Maxell commercial, anyone?) for something that should have been expressing kind of a diamond in the rough type feel, you know?

I had also forgotten that this was a Bruckheimer flick.

So you liked or didn't like the flick? I was thinking that this should be your 'stripper movie', one done right and more along the lines of real drama with conflict, which this one has none of.

I really need to watch "Make It Happen" because the trailer looked like it was just a remake of THIS movie without the welding or potential nudity.

I don't recall ever liking "Flashdance" that much, certainly not to the level of hype and reverence that everyone has for it.  I did enjoy the J Lo music video version though, since it was iike a "best of" and it was very likely not a dude dancing.

Movie was shot well, though.

Interesting article that, as a writer, I'm paying close attention to: the 31-year battle over Flashdance.  Life rights for $2300.  This is why I don't want to tell other people's stories, I don't want to find myself in the situation where I could do something like this to someone.

I want to see those photos in all their glory in a proper coffee table book. I would buy it immediately. It just sucks that people when faced with short term gratification of money in pocket now, end up paying a bigger price for it the rest of their lives because they either don't have the forethought of potential earnings or just don't care and take what's in front of them. The movie was a phenomenon and did alter and change American culture at the time, and that in itself would be the most excruciating thing to deal with....seeing it happening before your very eyes and having to keep quite. Ouch. With that said, the movie still sucks. And no, I wouldn't dare invest my time in telling someone else's story with so many pitfalls just waiting to bite me in the ass down the road.
