Furious 7

Trailer

I waited a long time to finally be able to watch Furious 7 and it was worth the wait. It was a fun, over the top thrill ride for most of the film. I thought the film makers and Special FX crew did a great job of completing the film to honor Paul Walker's final film given that there wasn't a whole lot of film to work with and it is noticeable in the reduce screen time he has. As much as I wanted to see Furious 7, part of me didn't want to knowing this was it. Ironically enough, it was the tribute at the end that I wanted to see more than the movie itself given how many people were pointing out this particular moment when talking about the movie. As I said, this movie is over the top to the point of being a cartoon.....but it was fun. It's expected and I think had they not done that, it would have been a let down in some ways.

I enjoyed the movie for what it was, but I was kind of disappointed with a couple of things. I was expecting to see Lucas Black join the crew since they were tying up loose ends with Tokyo Drift. That didn't happen. Also, I wasn't expecting to see Dwayne Johnson basically riding the bench for the bulk of the movie. He has 5 minutes at the beginning and then we don't see him again until the 3rd Act kicks in. But when he does, he owns it. I highly recommend this as a Rent and the tribute alone is worth it if you're not into these kinds of flicks. One last thing, it was strange to see Ronda Rousey in this given the fact that just last Saturday I watched her get her first career loss in her brutal beat down and now today, she gets another "beat down" albeit it Hollywood style. I couldn't help but watching her scenes akin to a flat tire now that her aura of invincibility is gone.

I thought the treatment of Paul Walker's departure was done very tastefully.

Yea, I would have liked more Rock, but overall, 7 delivered as expected.

I'm not sure what Vin Diesels view on the series. I think the last I heard they had several trilogies in mind. I don't recall if this was the thinking before or after Walkers passing..

On another Vin Diesel note, he just announced a possible TV Riddick series and more in the movie series.

I heard that Vin was having so much trouble getting a director to sign on for Furious 8 that he was going to direct it himself. Not sure if this is fact or not...but it's what I've heard through news media.

The tribute to Walker was nice, but it struck me that if you had no idea that Paul Walker had died, you would be TOTALLY confused by the ending.  After all, Han died at the start and that was a fan fave character, but he's not mentioned after a short while.  He's just motivation.  Meanwhile Walker is focused on so much that, with the forty freaking minutes of recaps that started the movie, you could be forgiven for thinking "did Dom and Ryan have a sex scene in an earlier movie?  Is that why there's so much T&A in these movies, like they're compensating?"  Maybe it's just me being cynical, but it feels like they went a bit overboard (the fact that they went full on "Oscar" promo push for this movie is also a sign of that).

I think it works whether it's known or not. The Tribute is also commenting on their Bromance in the series as they go their separate ways at the end. It just makes it more poignant given what happened IRL. Just my take on it.
