Leatherheads

Trailer

The new football season is upon us and the Chargers open Monday Night Football tonight. I usually like to watch a football movie to kick off the season. But instead of going to the standard choices like Invincible or Any Given Sunday, I decided to go with Leatherheads, which I haven't seen before. Directed by George Clooney, this is definitely a lite Comedy. Set in the 1920's, it basically the birth of Professional Football as it's become now, with rules and regulations that elevate it beyond the barnstorm years of rag tag players and leagues trying to stay in business.

The movie is kinda like The Natural in look and feel, only this isn't Epic or Magical in any way. Even though I love the bulk of the dialogue that's written here, especially by Renée Zellweger who has a knack for giving her line readings just the right tone and inflection, the story itself is kinda ill-defined. It doesn't really know what it wants to be. Is it about Clooney's character wooing Renée's character? Is it about uncovering the secret of star football player played by John Krasinski? Is it about the new Football League? There really wasn't anything that skewed it one way or another.

It's a fun movie in some places. It's not a bad movie, but it's certainly one that I wouldn't put in the same category of the greatest football films of all time. Worth a Rent and nothing more. Great cinematography and a kick ass score that is based on the music of the 1920's. I loved how Clooney used still images throughout the film. It does add a bit of authenticity to it. I just wish the story was more focus, which would have made a bigger impact on the film.
