Baywatch (2017)
3 Stars our of 5

Trailer

I went into Baywatch with very low expectations in spite of a fun, exciting Trailer. Even with that, I knew exactly what I would be getting. But when word began coming out from critics, fans, whoever ripping this movie as the worst of the year, my expectations went even lower. Well, having just watched this, it's nowhere near as bad as most people have made it out to be. Really not sure what prompted such harsh reviews. There are 5 movies from 2017 that I would say belong in the "Worst of the Year" category. This isn't one of them. It's in year with other recent TV Series reboots like 21 Jumpstreet. Is Baywatch as good as that one? No. But Baywatch provided a lot of laugh out loud moments that were truly funny. Surprisingly so. Dwayne Johnson is his usually reliable self here playing up basically the same role he has in all his flicks. This is definitely a worthy Rent. I'd definitely watch this again if I came across it channel surfing for sure. It's basically a Dick and Fart joke movie and sometimes that all I need when I'm not in the mood for anything highbrow or serious. I'm not opposed to a sequel. Kelly Rohrbach is my new crush.

I haven't finished this yet, I'm at the part where they get to the party.

The movie is kind of interesting, the mood is a bit all over the place... it's kind of 21 Jump Street-y and parody but also weirdly high budget action... the boat fire sequence was pretty dope, it seemed like the kind of thing that the old show would have wanted to do, remember it started off as a serious tribute to lifeguards, people who risked their lives for strangers every day.

The stuff with Kelly Rohrbach and... Ronnie... it's cute.

That's all I can think of right now.

So I finally finished this one, and I'm not quite sure how I feel about it.  Definitely second that 3 out of 5 stars, I think there were an equal amount of moments I liked and moments I didn't.  It was a comedy, but I didn't laugh at too much of it.

I was digging Kelly Rohrbach too, adorable.  And I love her with Ronnie, you know I'm a sucker for a "loser gets the girl" storyline, though I would have liked to see some more of it... and to have her have a flaw or two, you know?  Humanize her a bit.

I also felt that... what's her name, the second in command?  Stephanie?  She's awesome and totally underserved, I guess because she's more or less a "straight man" to all the craziness and there's only so much you can do with that, but I'd have like to have seen her have more to do.  Doubly so because she's... I'm not sure what ethnicity she is, but representation matters plus she's crazy hot, come on.

Actually, that's the thing that really surprised me about the movie, there's not that much T&A.  It's all dick jokes and so on, and the girls who are in it are beautiful, but from what I remember about the show, it was wall to wall beautiful women.  I know you can't do THAT in a movie today, but... didn't that feel a bit weird to anyone else?

Also weird was I couldn't quite place the tone of the movie, the comedy bits were there but then the action beats were just straight on action.  There were straight up moments of parody, but the tone wasn't a hundred percent consistent.  I think it's because there were two different groups of writers (that we know about), I'm imagining this thing got rewritten and messed around with a bunch of times.

The tone of the movie was definitely shifting from one genre to the other for sure.
