Girls (Season 1 - 2012)

Trailer

I have been looking forward to checking out Girls for the last couple of years because of all the rave reviews the series has been getting, not to mention that wherever I turned to, it was Lena Dunham this and Lena Dunham that. So, you can imagine my expectations are unrealistically high for this one to say the least. Also, having Judd Apatow attached to this made it more so. So, did Season 1 meet my expectations? Yes and no.

First off, I will commend that Lena deserves all the praise she has been getting. I've never seen anyone as "young" as her have as much control of a series, especially for something that finally made her a household name. I was amazed that she was able to write or co-write every episode (10 in all) for this season. Now add in the fact that she directed more than half the episodes, stars and is an executive producer and not to mention the sole creator of the series and you have someone rising up the ranks pretty damn fast. I also commend her for baring it all and in some very compromising positions. Think about it, someone gets the golden ticket (a series) and the first thing they do is start to censor themselves to make themselves look as good as possible. Lena doesn't and that's why most of the episodes work for me. It's as close to the real thing as you're gonna get from a Hollywood production. Even the majority of reality shows don't get it right and that sh*t is suppose to be real!

I love how Girls portrays relationships for what they are....messy, complicated, weird, confusing and stupid. And yet we all go through it and actually seek it out. That's what makes it so relatable. And it's not just from the female perspective either. The male view is laid bare for all to see as well. At one extreme you have a guy that treats women with no respect and at the other end you have a guy that smothers his girlfriend with too much love. I really liked how by the end of the season, the roles are completely reverse. At the beginning, as a viewer we are asking ourselves why the hell Hannah (Dunham) would subject herself by sticking with Adam (Adam Driver), her obnoxious "boyfriend". She spends the entire season chasing him, trying to get him to officially commit and when he finally does, she's the one that really comes off looking like an idiot and one that isn't mature enough of for a serious relationship.

The season started off strong and ended strong, but there were a couple of flat moments in the middle that kinda dragged on a bit that didn't go anywhere. The wedding in the season finale in particular came out of nowhere and really didn't make sense other than to further Jessa (Jemima Kirke) as being impulsive. I would have liked to seen a setup for this. I like most of the characters and the actors that portray them. I would say that Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is my fave and I'm in love with Marnie or more specifically Allison Williams, the actress that portrays her. I do like the show and I'm looking forward to getting Season 2, which is forthcoming from my library. So, I won't have to wait long. I highly recommend this season as a Rent for sure. It's certainly not like anything you have seen before and you will probably be taken aback by how in your face they are about depicting sex.
