Glengarry Glen Ross
10th Anniversary Special Edition

Trailer

I originally bought Glengarry Glen Ross as a blind-buy years ago just for the cast alone. I didn't even know what the story was about going into it and really didn't care at all. I just wanted to see the powerhouse cast that included Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin, Jonathan Pryce and Alan Arkin. How can you not want to see what they have in store? I'm pretty sure this is only the second time I've seen the movie. There are a couple of good things going for the movie. For starters, David Mamet's writing is popping. It's got a snap that you don't normally find in films these days. There are so many scenery chewing monologues to be found here. Sweet stuff. The acting is in a word....stellar. The other thing that really makes the movie a work of art is James Foley direction. I'm so glad that the movie mirrors what is basically a 'Play on Film'.

Now for the one negative(s) I do have with the movie. The first half of the movie does take a bit too long in it's set up. The movie really doesn't take flight until after the office break-in. Once the key players are back in the office, it's an acting and writing school for anyone looking to get into the profession. I'm still torn as to actually 'owns' the movie. Is it Pacino? Or is it Lemmon? They both rock the sh*t out of this one. Man, how can you ever look at Lemmon the same way after his profanity-laced tirade? I expect it from Pacino.....but not Lemmon. The other negative I had/have with the movie is that I absolutely HATE salesmen. I have serious issues when it comes to anyone constantly trying to sell sh*t, no matter the cost, whether people can afford it or not. So, no matter how great the acting and writing is, and this is a tour de force, I still can't get past the fact that it's a room full of "Used Car Salesmen". Still definitely worth a Rent though.

I remember bring bored as heck for the first half... even though I dug the movie a lot, I don't think I'd want to see it again.  Except for Alec Baldwin's bit, of course.

I like how you brought up hating salesmen, that was one of the things I hated when I worked retail, I liked setting people up with the stuff they were looking for but I HATED having to upsell stuff, try to get them to buy stuff they didn't want.  I was never good at that, and I didn't like that, so I really connected to Jack's character.  And you know that character was the inspiration for Gil in the Simpsons.

I seriously have real-world issues with any kind of 'Salesman', be it Car Salesman, Real Estate Agents or Telemarketers. This sh*t gets my blood boiling. Sad to say, but I don't handle it well, especially when I tell them to back off and they still try to work angles with me. It's because of this issue I have that makes the fact that the entire movie centers around them all the more unappealing to me. It just goes to show that the writing is so great that I can get past that little roadblock and enjoy the scenes for what they are: AWESOME!

I'm such weak sauce, I know they're just doing their job and have a very low success rate so I feel a little bad when I turn 'em down, although none of them have really ever harassed me.  Maybe if they did once in a while I would so something, be a tough customer or ask lots of crazy questions, do a little routine with them, you know?

Hahahaha. You have no idea how many times I've done this. I don't like being bothered when I'm shopping in a store, especially when I already have all the information I need before I even step foot into said store. I will politely decline help....but more often than not, they persist because they are working on a commission and will keep coming back every few minutes. That's when I got into "gonna f*ck wit chu now mode" and start throwing out numbers and specs up the wazoo. No one has ever survived this little bit I do because I then end up schooling them in the art of whatever product it is I'm talking about. They get flustered and have no way of responding back in a knowledgeable way. That's when they "excuse" themselves and go elsewhere.

I should play ignorant... or try to think of the questions my mom would ask and amp it up to 11.  Especially fi I'm in a store I never go to, that'd be best, that way I won't have to worry about being consistent.  I just don't have that instinct to jump in and do it.
