A lot has been said about the resurgence of
Ben Affleck's second career as he has shifted from in front of the camera to behind it.
Gone Baby Gone is where is made people take noticed that he has something to offer in the way as a film maker and having just watched this one, I totally agree. Like a lot of movies, I kept putting this one off and just now got around to it. First off, I gotta say that the cast in this one is top notch with the likes of
Morgan Freeman and
Ed Harris. Not to be outdone is
Casey Affleck, who actually goes toe to toe with the heavyweights and holds his own. Hell, you can't go wrong with your cast when you also have
Amy Ryan, who is phenomenal here.
So, how do I write a review about a film that requires that you be kept in the dark so as not to spoil it? This is after all a mystery that needs to be solved and to say anything about what I thought here and what I thought there would absolutely ruin it for you. Now, having said that, since I spend my time writing my own screenplays and short stories and the amount of time I've devoted to studying the craft, the twist that come in this one were easy to spot. This isn't a knock against
Ben Affleck, who also co-wrote the script. It's a great story with some even better dialogue scenes that any actor would kill to recite. But for me, it was clear as day where the story was going and who is involved.
What's really great about the movie is that it asked everyone who watches it, "what would you do"? How would you handled the end? Does he make the right choice? Does he regret his choice? Personally, I don't know what I do because the line is definitely crossing over each other and it's hard to and not regret your choice one way or another. It's a lose/lose scenario.
Anyways, this is definitely worth a
Rent for sure. My only advice is not to try and over-think it and try to solve it before everyone else. I guess that's kinda the point as a movie goer huh? It's why your watching it to begin with. Anyway, check it out.
