Fanboys (2009)
« on: April 06, 2014, 06:49:26 pm »

Can you guess the sole reason why I wanted to see Fanboys? Yep. Kristen Bell. It's weird, but my Library didn't have a copy of this at all. I actually would consistently check online at least once a month just to see if my Library finally ordered it. They did. Only problem is that it took over a year for them to get off their asses. So, in a way, THIS is the longest wait time ever for a DVD from my branch. Was it worth the wait? Um, hell no. You know, I wasn't really expecting much from a movie called Fanboys, but I was expecting to at least get something halfway decent, if not original. The movie is nothing more than a Road Trip flick (which I am a fan of) as a bunch of Star Wars fans make their way to Lucas Ranch to break in and watch a rough cut of The Phantom Menace before it's official release date. Simple plot. How can you mess that up?

For starters, for a movie that is all about the Star Wars Universe, the script itself does a bad job in pretty much everything as it becomes nothing more than a parody. The entire movie is basically cramming in as many scene homages as possible with cameos from Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams and Ray Park. But there were other cameos that I didn't see coming, especially that of Seth Rogen and William Shatner, which were mildly amusing. The entire time I was watching this, I kept thinking that the writer and director were basically trying to do their own 'Kevin Smith' flick and were failing at it. I even kept thinking that Kevin would probably say this movie sucked for tying to move in on his territory. No sooner had I said that to myself, lo and behold, both Kevin and Jason Mewes would in fact pop up in their own cameos as well, which by the way, I thought was the best of all the cameos. In the end, this movie reminded me a lot of Detroit Rock City, which ironically stared Sam Huntington as well. Great premise, lousy execution. This is a Skip. As hot as Kristen is wearing the Slave Leia costume, it can't save the movie.

What was really funny to me was watching the movie, I kept thinking of K Bell as Christy Marie, and it just felt weird to see a character in a movie who was someone I knew.

Are you aware of the whole backstory of the movie?  It's pretty infamous in online geek circles because it was originally way different, a bit more serious (the "cancer" plot), and the finished product is the result of a lot of notes and interference, if I recall correctly.  And I'm not sure, but I THINK this might actually have been written BEFORE The Phantom Menace came out, and you know that they say scripts age like fish.

I vaguely remember hearing about the "real" story, but I never investigated it or tried to find out more information. I actually thought it was more rumor than actual fact. Since this is completely different from it's original intent, you don't have to look any further than Harvey Scissorhands for someone to blame.

You know, every time I see cosplay in a movie or TV, I keep thinking that there's some rule or something that says the costumes can't actually look as good as the ones I've seen.  I wonder if it's a suspension of disbelief thing.

Also I'm a giant geek for focusing on the costume and not the gorgeous woman inside the costume, so you don't need to point that out.
